I want to be a surgeon. I'm not sure what type, though... maybe Maxillofacial.

No it isn’t.

Pipe dream: tenured professor.
Realistic ideas: actuary or high school teacher.

Anyone without a full scholarship better be going to college to get a job. You make a $100,000 (sometimes above $200,000) investment in education in order to get a sizeable return on that investment over the next 35 years of your life. A college degree is the new diploma, “everyone” applying for a job has one.

That’s how I see it.

“I believe the point of college is to get a job” doesn’t mean the same thing as “everyone believes the point of college is to get a job.”
I agree that going to college without considering the future is generally a bad idea (though I don’t believe a university should be treated solely as a vocational school), but people do it all the time. Don’t ascribe your own motives to others.

Keep in mind that most people go to state schools and community colleges, so it isn’t usually that much.

Journalist or maybe something in politics. I could also see maybe becoming a doctor. Not 100% sure at this point…

Scientist/Mathematician (I’m probably going to end up just being a doctor, though. )

Even state schools are crazy expensive compared to how they used to be. My dad went to WVU and it cost him $20,000 for 4 years. If I wanted to go to Maryland, in state, it would cost that for each year. Community college is a cheap alternative, but you only get an associate’s.

I change my statement to the majority of people go for future employmemt. There will always be people who pay lots to be “academically enriched,” regardless of employment status.

Criminal prosecutor.

dietitian realistically. my unrealistic dream would be a blogger/ youtuber. I just really love journalism but something more exciting/creative than newspaper

preamble we should chat sometime. I’m between civil litigation and criminal defense but I’ve been advised to keep my mind open until law school. Then the dream is to eventually become a judge, that might be crazy though.

historian, museum curator, archivist, history professor or something like that

My goal is to be a school superintendent but I plan on starting out as an ESL teacher (travelling overseas a few years, then coming back to the US).

Something that seems really appealing at the moment is being on the school board

Managing an engineering firm.

A veterinarian.

When I grow up, I’m gonna be the greatest firetruck there ever was.

An architect, though I have a vague suspicion I’m going to be sucked into the vortex that is economics

i want to live in a tiny apartment, preferably somewhere nice but if no other financially viable options exist the slums will do (i just won’t be able to go outside, so everything will have to be ordered and delivered to me). aside from food i will require a laptop and internet, but beyond that and rent my expenses will be limited. all of this, ideally, will be afforded by foodstamps and wellfare, but if my government cannot cover my meager demands than i will have to look elsewhere, meaning online, for some small income stream to supplement what i can get from the admirable taxpayers :D

go into marketing for a large business. OR start my own business and be successful :)

Hopefully, a neurosurgeon! Later on in life, there’s the possibility that I might get involved in Pennsylvania politics! One day, you all might be calling me Senator Clark from PA :D
