I just received a call from Cornell. The lady on the phone was saying how I'm academically qualified and everything, but if I don't get into Cornell Arts and Sciences (the school I applied to) would I be willing to be considered for the College of Architecture. I told her I would look into the school, and the Urban Planning major but I know I would not attend the College of Architecture if admitted. Does this mean I won't be admitted into the College of Arts and Sciences?

This is interesting, and it seems to me that she might have called you in that idea, If I were you, I would accept her offer for consideration; provided your interests are similar to those of the Architecture school, it really cannot hurt you. It sounds as though they feel you would be an excellent fit for architecture school.

If need be, you can do an internal transfer once you’re there, but I think that if you are pursuing Urban Planning, the Architecture school is absolutely exemplary, and I hope that you will consider it.

However, it wouldn’t hurt you to accept her offer and see how it is, provided you feel comfortable doing so.

I know getting considered for the College of Architecture would be like a second chance at Cornell if things don’t go positively with the College of Arts and Sciences, but I haven’t really had much exposure/interest in architecture. I took a technical drawing class freshman year and I didn’t really like it. My interests align more with sociology, history, politics, & marketing, not really architecture. I think I will decline because I don’t want to mislead them.

Hmm… Looks like you didn’t get in to that college - I said “like” so there’s always hope!
If you really do want to go to Cornell, accept her offer immediately! Then at least (from what you said) you will get into one of those schools.

Work hard your first year and then transfer to the college of your choice.
Good luck!

Thanks everyone, but I have another issue…today an admissions officer e-mailed me and asked if I would like to be considered for the Developmental Sociology major in CALS. I didn’t apply for the primary/alternate admissions initially so I was surprised. While I think I may take this offer since I applied to CAS as a sociology major (and if you’re wondering I didn’t take the lady’s offer to be considered for the Architecture school), I still have questions. I researched the developmental sociology major in CALS and it has a lot of environmental and science based courses, which makes sense since it’s in CALS, but I’m not the biggest fan or science. I was wondering if I was to be admitted under this major in CALS, could I take CAS courses and one or two CALS classes like DSOC 1101 and a non life science major course (preferably without a lab if such courses exist), then transfer internally into CAS after first semester?

My daughter’s good friend was in A&S, but decided to transfer to Architecture Urban Planning. I also know she took a lot of humanities courses in A&S with my daughter. Her interest is race, gender differences. She has just been accepted to most of top law schools.

Contract schools tuitions are lower for NY state residents. As Cornell meets 100% of student’s needs, your FA will be less, but your out of pockets would be the same.
