Does anyone know what the ACT score to get into Tisch/NYU is? And can anyone tell me the required GPA and what classes in high school are needed to attend?? I can’t find it on the NYU website, and it’s driving me nuts! haha. Please and thank you!!! :)

First of all, because NYU is a private and very selective university (for regular admissions, not even counting the competitiveness for the artistic review), it doesn’t have some sort of GPA or test score “cut off” that you have to have in order to be admitted. It doesn’t work that way. I can give you the statistics for admitted students to NYU. Keep in mind that the acceptance rate to the university itself is 29% and so that must be factored into assessing your chances of admission. When the admit rate is that low, not everyone who has the qualifications to get in will be accepted.

The Avg. GPA of accepted students is 3.63. 69% of accepted students come from the top 10% of their HS class, 92% from the top 25%, 100% from the top 50%. The Mid SATs of admitted students are CR 630-730, M 650-750, CR/M 1280-1480, and mid ACT scores are 29-31.

NYU has new testing requirements and options for this next admissions cycle. You can take the SAT or the ACT w/Writing OR just take 3 SAT Subject Tests (one in humanities, one in math/science and one choice that is not a foreign language) OR submit 3 AP scores (one in a humanities, one in a math/science and one choice but not in a foreign language).

In terms of high school curriculum, the min. required courses are 4 units of English, 2 units of Foreign Languages, 4 units of History, 3 units of Math, 3 units of Science, 2 Science Labs and the recommended high school course work is 4 units of English 3 units of Foreign Languages, 4 units of History, 4 units of Math, 4 units of Science. HOWEVER, NYU considers RIGOR of your curriculum to be VERY important and so they are looking for applicants who have taken a very demanding courseload within the context of what their own high school offers (ex…if your HS offers AP or Honors courses, they would want you to have taken many of those, and they would prefer to see students who took five core academic subjects all four years of high school, and so on).

Now, as you can see there are not GPA or test score “cut offs” to be admitted. If your GPA or test scores fall under the average or mid range for NYU, your chances become slimmer. If they are in the ballpark, you have a decent chance to be considered academically (but that doesn’t mean you would be accepted) and if your “stats” fall above the average for admitted students, your chances are greater but not a sure bet given the low acceptance rate.

Further, NYU doesn’t just consider your “stats” when reviewing your application. As a selective university, more applicants have the required “numbers” to be admitted than can actually be accepted. So, NYU very much considers your essays, recommendations, extracurriculars, achievements, and personal qualities.

Also, NYU/Tisch admissions counts academics as 50% of the admissions decision and artistic review as 50% of the admissions decision. While the acceptance rate to NYU itself is 29%, the acceptance rate for the Musical Theater program itself is more in the ballpark of about 6%. The admission to NYU/Tisch is all or nothing and if you apply to Tisch and are not admitted for the BFA program, you cannot be admitted to the university separately.

Hope this helps.

Soozie gave a great description. I would just add that while the acceptance rate for MT at Tisch is that low, for the Drama program as a whole, it appears to be about 17%. If you audition for MT, they will ask you if you would accept another studio besides MT.

That’s all correct- also keep in mind that if you do intend to apply for drama, a clear “focus” in pursuing your dramatic education will go a long way. For me this meant only taking two “academic” classes senior year, as well as a lot of theater, choir, etc (Im an MT). I’d say that for Tisch specifically as long as you’re in the ballpark GPA wise they’ll consider you even if you don’t have a 4.0. I had a 3.29 but did well on my SATS (2180)/ ACTS (31) and took challenging courses so I was able to balance out imperfect grades. Hope that helps give you an idea of one kind of student that they may be looking for. Good luck!

Ohhh thanks so much guys!!! I am suddenly feeling the need to go study, haha.

Ohhhh, and are taking the SAT’s something that I have to do? Because I know that some colleges don’t require it. My brother got into college with only having to get a certain score on his ACT.

As I wrote in my earlier post:

To be as clear as possible, if you take the ACT With Writing, NYU will take that and you don’t have to take the SATs. This is true at most colleges.

But also to be as clear as possible, there is not a “certain” score that gets you in. You can have a 31 ACT and still be rejected and you can have a 29 and be admitted.

Keep in mind that only 13% of applicants to NYU submit ACT scores and so the mid range of accepted students’ scores of 29-31 doesn’t represent that large of a sample of the admitted students.

Many, many wonderful things have already been said, but I was accepted to NYU Tisch so I thought I might as well throw my personal scores in too? I’m the opposite (basically) of mema, high GPA (4.021) with a medium range SAT Score (1900). I think the essays have qutie a bit to do with it, too! They give you a lot of room to be creative and inventive and really want to know you!
