What happened to the Stevens Tech???

I was wondering why the Stevens abruptly so underrated ? I couldnt even find it's rank in the world's top colleges list now.

I just checked the world's top 500 list released in 2004, the Stevens was in the top 50.

I dont know what is happening, seems like also nobody is applying to the Stevens ?

What is the problem with that school ?

You mean Stevens Institute of Technology? It’s listed as rank=83 in Tier 1 of National Universities for US News…

It’s one of the under the radar schools.
Surprisingly, the low female to male student ratio shuns away a lot of otherwise prospective students.

I go there now and it is under the radar to some students. Aside from that however we are located right across from manhattan so most of our graduates obtain great jobs comparable to top schools. Most of the students here if not all have full or half rides attracting them here instead of going to other top schools like RPI, cornell, NYU, CMU and others. There needs to be a re-ranking

My 21-yo son is a student at Stevens. He is majoring in biomedical engineering. He was also accepted at RPI and Stonybrook (the only three schools he applied to). RPI was his first choice but they didn’t offer him a financial aid package we could live with. But once he got to Stevens he has loved it.

It seems on rankings like US News Stevens loses points on the peer assessment part, which I could see, as I attend Stevens and a lot of people aren’t too happy with the education/ quality of the school/ not up to par with what they expected.

Saw this in the NY Times, and for those interested in Stevens it is an interesting read: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/22/education/22stevens.html?_r=1&ref=education

3321–I saw that article also. A lot of fund misuse going on.

RPI president had the same type of over compensation allegations last year…

As a Steven’s parent, I received this email on Tuesday:

Dear Families,

There has been some coverage of Stevens in the press over the last several months with regard to the New Jersey Attorney General’s office. The Stevens Board of Trustees and their attorneys have reached an agreement with the Attorney General and the Judge to have their response submitted in January 2010, so we cannot comment on the particulars at this time. It is important for you to know, however, that none of the allegations in the filing has anything to do with our outstanding academic reputation, world class research or the continuing legacy of innovation and excellence on our campus.

Middle States reaffirmed our accreditation in 2008 with very positive comments on all aspects of the academic, administrative and student affairs at Stevens. Despite the economy, our financial outlook is stable, due to robust enrollment demand at the graduate and undergraduate levels as well as our generous alumni and friends.

This is a time of great achievement at Stevens. Research is at record levels, and we have been selected as a National Center of Excellence by the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Defense. The opportunities for our graduates for job placement and graduate school are unparalleled. In addition:
Stevens’ already highly-acclaimed WebCampus was named this year the second largest online engineering program by US News & World Report, ranking above the likes of Columbia University and Virginia Tech.

A group of Stevens undergraduates was awarded top honors recently by the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering (ISPE). The poster competition resulted in both regional and national awards for the students.

Stevens’ men’s soccer team finished the season 15th in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America national poll, after making its eighth NCAA Division III Tournament appearance en route to the sixth sectional berth in program history. Zach Carr, a junior goalkeeper on the men’s soccer team, was recently named both an CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine first-team Academic All-American and a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) first-team All-American. Additionally, four teams advanced to postseason play in this very successful season for Stevens athletics.

Dr. Michael S. Bruno, Dean of Stevens Institute of Technology’s Schaefer School of Engineering & Science, has been appointed to the Naval Research Advisory Committee (NRAC) by the Secretary of the Navy, with the concurrence of the Office of the Secretary of Defense, effective January 2010.

To date this calendar year, Stevens has received 22 NSF grants in almost every research area totaling over $13 million. This brings the currently active NSF projects at the Institute to 48. The National Science Foundation ranks as the most prestigious grant funding institution in the United States. It funds only 20% of all federally supported research conducted by American colleges and universities.

Stevens Institute of Technology was named a Yellow Ribbon Program partner by the Department of Veterans Affairs last spring, marking Stevens as the first participating research university in New Jersey and the surrounding metropolitan area. Since then, and the re-establishment of the Stevens Veterans Office (SVO) in June 2009, more than 20 veterans, current military members and those members’ children have enrolled in Stevens Institute of Technology classes at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.

The University is celebrating its 140th anniversary in 2010. We are taking this opportunity to celebrate our legacy of academic excellence and innovation. There are many events and celebrations planned throughout the year to mark this special milestone.

We look forward to continued success and wish you the same in the New Year.

With warm regards,

Maureen P. Weatherall
Vice President of University Enrollment and Administration
