Hello my dear CC friends, I applied to UCLA Communications this year but I don't have the "COMM ST M70-Origin of Language" pre-req...It is offered in my school but I just don't can't finish it this semester...will I be rejected automatically? :(

Definitely hurt but wouldn’t hurt much since its communication. I believe that missing a pre-req in fields such as science and engineering is a major thing though. You should be in good shape if your GPA is high.

Comm at UCLA is significantly difficult to be accepted into. And every little bit matters. The average gpa admitted is 3.89. While the class you didn’t take is some what rare to find in any CCC how that effects you could go one of two ways, “Well, very few people have that class anyways so it is fine.” Or, “Well, very few people are able to take that class so why wouldn’t this person. They must not really care.” Of course these are exaggerations.

I would THINK that it would certainly hurt your chances but please do not take ANYTHING in terms of “chances” on this site from anyone as fact. So while some situations are a bit simple an overwhelming majority of the admissions process is very ambiguous. Good luck.

@mental2 thank you sooooo much for your information…
How I wish I can take it this semester…so that I won’t be tortured by UCLA Admission…

@UCBhopeful16 thank you for that helpful link!
Omg…the admit rate of Comm is…dreadfullllll!!
I wish I had applied for Econ …haha

The admit rate should be irrelevant to your choice of major. You should pick what major you’re interested in and whose classes will serve you best in pursuit to your desired career.

The admit rate is irrelevant between Economics and Communications, both majors are highly competitive and the GPA is about the same for either one. The difference you see in the admit rate is revealed in the average GPA applied category. Yes, Economics had a marginal 4% higher admission rate than Communications Studies at UCLA in 2012. But when you look at the average applied GPA you see that the group of applicants that applied were more competitive for Economics, and thus more likely to be admitted, relative to the those that applied to Communication Studies. The average GPA of the applicant pool applying to Communication Studies was 3.39, whist that for Economics was 3.51. So really the 4% difference is negligible. More people were admitted to Economics because more people were competitive, not because it was an easier path into UCLA than Communication Studies.

@dilapidatedmind excellent observation, I never even thought of that
