What if I missed the May 1st deadline to decline and cancel housing contract?

I was planning on attending UT;however, I decided not to go for financial reasons. Prior to making my decision, I already had a housing contract. I had forgotten about my application at UT so I never accepted or declined admission by May 1st. I have been getting emails from UT about housing. I want to cancel my housing application so I can stop getting these emails, but it says I have to pay a cancellation fee of $300, but I don't have that money right now. Will it be better to just ignore those emails, or do I actually have to pay $300? Help, please.

What happens is the deposit you already paid won’t be refunded. You don’t have to pay another $300.

From this site: http://bealonghorn.utexas.edu/freshmen/housing/advance

Can I get a refund if I’m a first-time freshman?
If I cancel after May 1 and before July 1
If you’re a first-time freshman and you cancel your housing contract for any reason after May 1 and prior to July 1, your $300 advance payment is not refundable and is applied to a $300 cancellation fee.

If you qualified for a financial aid deferment a cancellation fee of $300 will be billed to your What I Owe Page.

You are better off cancelling the contract and paying the cancellation fee. If you don’t (by at least July 1st), the fee increases to $500 as July 1st is where they start with dorm assignments. If you get assigned to a room and want to cancel the contract then, you would have to pay even more (due to being charged for liquidated charges). Not checking in also causes an increase in fees. Plus, not cancelling the contract will cause problems for other people who are staying at a dorm at UT, as you’ll be placed in a room instead of someone who is going to UT.

So basically, just pay the fee as soon as possible. It will prevent problems later on.

Thank ya’ll for the help. I already cancelled it.

Damn, nevermind is still have to pay $300 :/

Didn’t you do an advanced payment of $300 to keep your spot? That is what they keep. I can hardly see how they can charge you.

Not all students had to pay the advanced payment to submit their contract. Those students would have to pay the cancellation fee if they want to cancel the contract in that case. For example, I didn’t have to pay the advanced payment, so if I wanted to cancel the contract (which I really don’t want to), then I would have to pay $300.

Either way, it may not have to be done now, but do your best to get the cancellation as soon as possible, and good luck to wherever you are going.

HEY! READ THIS CAREFULLY lol. You don’t have to pay the cancellation fee if you ARE NOT ATTENDING UT. Since you aren’t going, contact the division of housing and tell them that, and you can contact the admissions office as well to confirm that you are indeed not attending next year.

If you aren’t attending UT Austin, you could only not pay the cancellation fee if you canceled by May 1. If you cancel after May 1, even if you are not attending UT, you still are subject to the cancellation fee - that’s in the contract Terms & Conditions.
