What impact can TOEFL score make besides college admission?

Hello guys! I just got my TOEFL iBT result.

Reading: 30
Listening: 27
Speaking: 22
Writing: 29
Overall: 108

In my view, reading and writing sections are pretty good whereas listening and, in particular, speaking sections are indeed disappointing. As far as I'm concerned, 105+ in total is enough for admission process of most universities and my score matches the requirements of my target universities. Yet, I was wondering how my poor performance in speaking section will adversely affect my chance of getting accepted to scholarship, internship and other programs. Thank you!

You’re fine. You got 100+, universities will move on to your SAT or ACT score. The Toefl’s only point is to see if you can handle the work in English. You can, now they can look at factors to decide whether they want to select you or not.

A few colleges might have minimum admission requirements for the speaking section. (Chicago used to require a speaking score of 24, for example.)

In my own experiences, TOEFL scores are irrelevant once you are admitted. Academic scholarships are usually awarded on the basis of SAT scores and GPA / class rank. Service scholarships are awarded based on your community engagement. Athletic scholarships are awarded based on your athletic performance (/ nomination by your coach). And so on and so forth.

Internships won’t need your TOEFL score because they can speak to you in person during the job interview. (And they understand that old TOEFL scores aren’t very meaningful anyway because your English will improve a lot in 1 or 2 years in the US.)

The only thing that might happen is that the university might tag you for an ESL program. Graduate students often have to pass a language screening process before they are allowed to teach, for example. My own undergraduate college had a one-semester writing class that was recommended to all incoming students who did not attend an English-speaking high school; the class was mandatory for some students with language-related “red flags” in their application.

Thank you so very much for all your replies~!!

Hi, I am stuck up with a similar issue.
My TOEFL Total is 109. However, my score in the Speaking Section is only 22.
What were the impacts that your low Speaking Score had during your admissions and in the Grad School?
It will be very useful for me, as I am wondering if I should retake my TOEFL.

I don’t think universities will tag you in an ESL program for a 22 in Speaking.

Maniamkk, I dont think it could penalize you signifcantly.
By the way, please make your own thread.
