What is considered legacy?

Hi,
I was wondering is a student considered a legacy if their aunt went to Cornell, or would it give any kind of advantage?

I’ve heard that it’s only legacy if your relative is a direct ancestor - so a parent or a grandparent, but not aunts, uncles, cousins, siblings, etc.
Legacy is supposed to give advantage but I’m not sure if all legacies have an advantage, or just those whose parents or grandparents have donated money to Cornell.

The common application supplement asks if an applicant has a parent, grandparent, or great-grandparent who went to Cornell. My S has a great-grandfather who attended. Now that my S is a freshman there, we get all the “legacy” emails and mailings…

Dont underestimate sibling legacy though. I think you’d be hard pressed to find a kid who was top 15% in class with a 2050+ get rejected when they had a sibling attending Cornell.
