do we wear something formal-ish? are we completely casual? do we wear a swimsuit under for a swim test? (idk, i had to do that in summer school)

i was totally going to ask the same exact thing. somebody answer!

Do BS really make you take swimming tests? \o/ didn’t know that…

yes, especially if your going to be doing rowing. im thinking of wearing a “smart casual” probably some j crew. im not sure abotu wearing either jeans or chinos yet though ill probably wear jeans with a long sleeve j crew sweatshirt with some type of jacket on maybe northface i duno how cold its going to be.

well, it’s gonna be early fall, so i assume not very cold. i asked one of my friends who came to boarding school before me what she wore - she said that she just wore a pair of jeans and a polo! i think i’ll do the same, i don’t want to be too formal so i feel awkward as i run around town into stores.

You’re going to be moving into a dorm room…how about jeans or shorts and a t-shirt? I’m guessing that returning students don’t think twice about what they’re wearing day 1–they probably jump at the chance to wear their comfy clothes.

If you’re really worried…look at pics on the website of what kids are wearing when they’re not in class, and go with that.

You’ll be moving stuff into your dorm room - which could mean up several flights of stairs - so don’t dress up too much - dress comfortably. On the other hand, you’ll also be meeting folks for the first time including your dorm head, perhaps the headmaster or head of school - and that really cute boy/girl - so you don’t want to look like a slob either.

If your school is in the Northeast, it can be very warm in early September. Definitely check weather.com beforehand to dress appropriately.

Unless it is unseasonably cool, jeans will probably be too hot as would a jacket. And a t-shirt is a little casual in my opinion. I’d vote for nice shorts or khakis and a polo or nice shirt.

Thanks!! I was wondering this!

PEA teacher just answered this question under the Ask a Teacher thread…sounds like shorts and t-shirts there, but I’m guessing Exeter kids dress more casually in general than kids at some other schools.

I doubt any of you are going to pack your really ratty, mow the lawn clothes for school(!)–so I’m guessing that even the t-shirts that make it to your luggage would be nice enough for your dorm head on moving-in day. And you can always quickly change up if you’re going to a reception or out to eat.

That said, I’m sure norms vary. The mama in me just wants you to relax and enjoy that first day without worrying too much :)

im guessing polo’s and uggs for guys would be an essential, (uggs) if its cold out.

Probably shorts/athletic pants and a shirt.

For new Exeter students, this is when you get your online and ID pictures (they also go in the yearbook). Look nice or you’ll regret it. But casual is good, showing up in a dress shirt and a tie would be awful (comfort-wise). I don’t think most people really care though, and after you’ve moved in, you can always change into something that fits the environment more. I’ll probably just wear shorts and a t-shirt.

What a chick question.

I go (well, will be going) to a BS that you are required to wear uniforms, so on ‘move in’ day, is that what I wear? Or just something casual.

I heard that t schools with uniforms the first day you can just wear something casual. I’m not sure so I wouldn’t trust me but that’s something I read somewhere.

whoa… rebelangel, you’re a guy? woww…

I’m thinking a polo and a casual skirt, but I’m not a big jeans person. Wha is everyone wearing on the first day of classes? I’m wearing a dress w a cardigan and leather boots :)

UGh I have no idea what I’m going to wear. I’m usually a t-shirt-and-jeans kind of girl, but you can’t wear a simple t-shirt in Lville classes so I’m seriously gonna have to go shopping.
Kind of off topic but one thing I can’t wait for is the two huuge malls near lawrenceville. The place where I live has like nothing.

@LOLZ and Dapple: As a guy, I wear jeans and a polo almost every day… since there is time before classes start, you can see what other girls are wearing. jeans are fine. I only wear a polo because i have to
