I had a 3.4 recalculated, a 23 on the ACT and im in the top 24% of my class. I have all As & B s on my first report card and im expecting the same on my next one, which will make my semester grades Mostly ** and some As. I will be retesting like they suggested and sending in my scores. I am also submitting way more service hours, should i get letters of recommendation to be sent also ? This is my FIRST choice school. i literally SOBBED hours after my decision sunk in, I wouldnt care if i had to go during the summer.

Any suggestions on what i should do and any info on my chances on getting in ?

I can’t really tell you your chances, but I can make some suggestions on how to boost them. I was deferred too and they eventually gave me the option to start this spring, which I gladly accepted. I would definitely recommend retesting. This will show them that you are really serious about getting in and can make a big difference if your scores improve. Also try sending an updated transcript and continue to keep your grades up. I don’t think they accept letters of recommendation, but try submitting an essay if you haven’t already. Deferment is by no means the end of the world. Stay strong and eventually all of the hard work will pay off.

thank you ! i will DEFINITELY be retesting, I just read the counselor brochure for this year and i was basically deferred based off of my ACT score, which will probably get higher (seeing as how i never studied for the test when i took it and I went up in my subscores.)

Do you know if they will allow me to try and be considered for the Summer term instead of Fall, i should have applied for it to begin with but i dont know what I was thinking…

You mention that you had all A’s and B’s on your report card. What are your other grades, from past semesters? If you had any semester grade below a C, that is something that could keep you from being accepted. Keep in mind too that FSU didn’t see any of this semester’s grades- the last set of grades they have to look at is the end of your Junior year.

A 3.4 recalculated GPA is low. That to me sticks out much more than the ACT score. FSU cares more about your GPA and course rigor than they do your standardized test scores, especially since you can retake the SAT and ACT- you don’t get a second chance at your grades.

Baring a significant increase in one’s SAT / ACT scores and in their overall weighed GPA, obtaining acceptance after a deferral is a long shot. In all sincerity, with your academic history, I’m even surprised as to why you were even deferred as opposed to a flat out rejection.

You are so very welcome! I should also mention that FSU combines your test scores to make the best combination. When I contacted them about being considered for the summer, they said that they automatically reconsider students who didn’t make the cut for fall.

Suggestions- If your overall stats don’t improve and unless you have an excellent senior grades stats to update your file, chances of gaining acceptance after a deferral are minimal. Try that ACT / SAT again and hope for the best. A 23 on your ACT won’t cut it. Try your best to improve that score !
