I applied for fall 2018 and I was curious as to what exactly happens when you appeal/opt in for a waiting list. I know the appeal says to provide new and substantial evidence, are you able to provide them with your spring grades when appealing? Since most people won’t actually have their spring grades by then, are students able to just say what they have in all of their classes so far, or is a transcript/final grades required?
The UCs say it needs to be new and compelling info from fall or previous terms that you left out of application. But the truth is I have seen ppl get in who pitched spring grades and spring internships. One person up here wrote how he just wrote about how much he wanted that UC and was shocked he got in. So I say if you want to appeal just do it with all your heart. You never know.
@Ohm888 I see. I don’t know if I have to appeal quite yet, I have a good shot at Berkeley and LA but I want to know what the process is just in case. If I get rejected to LA, it can only be for one reason- I’m in progress with prereqs this semester (spring). So I’m thinking in a case where I appeal, I can offer my spring grades, as I can easily get an A in those courses. However, I’m just concerned about the timing. I believe the deadline to appeal is somewhere in May, whereas my final grades won’t come out till beginning of June. Do you know if students can submit a progress report in this scenario? Or maybe just talk about that in the appeal essay I guess?
@ericbadmon if that’s the case I say definitely pitch the grades and emphasize your knowledge of the dept and your overwhelming desire to go there. Regarding not having the final grades in hand, if you are certain you’re getting an A (or whatever grade you’re pitching) you could add that you are so sure of the outcome, UCLA can make the grades part of the provisional contract.
Regarding progress report, I’ve wondered about that. I’ve never heard it mentioned, but you possibly could try it.
Also you might have a compelling reason you could cite for why you had more than one major req last term.
@Ohm888 yeah I actually couldn’t enroll at all for the fall semester due to health issues… sucks cuz I would’ve got those done before spring had I been able to enroll. I have a 4.0 so far so I think that they’ll understand that me not enrolling is uncharacteristic, and something had to happen. (I explained it in the apps regardless). I’m hoping they are willing to cut me a bit of break cuz of that, but I completely understand if they don’t, as it can be argued that it wouldn’t be fair to the students who got everything done. I’m missing an intro chem and intro philosophy class. I’ve gotten A’s in premed prereqs and have definitely demonstrated a strength in the sciences so I’m hoping they are willing to give me the benefit of the doubt for the chem class. In which case it would leave me with intro to Phil, which is known as an “easy A class”
The provisional part is interesting. I heard they don’t do special conditional acceptances, they just make students taking major prereqs get at least a B in those classes?
What’s your major?
psych. and yeah I already know about that one girl who got waitlisted for 2 missing prereqs despite TAP lol
Waitlist isn’t the end of the world for tho, if I can provide them with my spring grades/expected grades I think I have a decent chance of getting pulled up from it
@ericbadmon haha I saw you mentioned seeing that post. But when you were talking pre-med I wasn’t sure. I have no idea how they operate, but I would assume what’s more important is what courses a person is missing. Missing Calc would be big, Bio too. Chem and philosophy are probably lower in the heirarchy. I’m just guessing. But anyway you have a great appeal if it comes to that and you did say you mentioned it. Plus, you have strength in sciences. There are people who have gotten in missing two.
