<p>There seems to be three things which are prevalent about frats/sororities; exclusivity/preppiness, some degree of hazing during pledging, and drinking. At MIT, the first one seemed to be entirely absent. </p>
<p>Undoubtedly, these three characteristics vary from house-to-house and campus-to-campus, but I think we can generalize and say that these three (negative) elements are something to watch out for.</p>
<p>I think MIT has it’s own unique properties too–there seemed to be a tangible fear among brothers of being perceived as “nerdy” in the frats, and that seemed to drive other behaviors. I’m sure at other universities, this isn’t an issue for them.</p>
