"We request, however, that students submit the Common Application and the Harvard Application Supplement by December 1 if possible. Receipt of these two forms allows us to expedite application processing and to arrange personal interviews more quickly."

But then the official deadline is Jan 1. So Dec 1 has already past. If I submit is now (Dec 15) or any time before Jan 1, will my chances be hurt because I didn't submit it by Dec 15?

Is the Jan. 1 deadline a postmark deadline or an everything-must-be-in-our-hands type deadline? I sent my part of the app in a month ago but I just learned that my English teacher hasn't even written my rec yet even though she's had over a month's notice. Should I freak out yet? If it does need to be there, how long do you think it takes a letter to get from Chicago to Boston?!

Frog-it's the postmark deadline, and usually it's ok if teachers get their recommendations in a little late--the most important thing is that you submit your part of the application on time.

so deadline for entering college in 2008 and graduating in 2012 is jan 1st 2008. that makes more sense to me. Sorry I was just kind of confused because I didn't know that you write the graduation year.
Not used to such specific ways of writing something which is clear for everyone who speaks English but not for me.
Thanks

Are you supposed to apply during your last high school year so you can enroll in the same year as you graduated from high school or are you supposed to wait one year?

You can wait one year and take a gap year--people who take gap years usually find them to be quite fulfilling, but most applicants enroll in the same year they graduate from high school.

um virtually all students enroll right after graduating... I've never met anyone who hasn't. That said, you can apply this year and push your acceptance back to wait a year, just be sure you make that year worthwhile (not sitting on your couch watching tv)
