What is the Emory crowd like?

I was wondering if the school is preppy? or jocky?

Emory is not preppy (if you want preppy, look to Vanderbilt). There are jocks but they're a crowd that generally stick to their own.

Emory is a mixed bag. The loud minorities are the japs (from Long Island, NY, Florida, etc.), the new yorkers, the korean internationals.

70% of Emory students are just normal college kids (who were most likely rejected by their top choice schools). It's a pretty relaxed environment... there is no school spirit and Greek life is something you can choose to participate in or ignore. In my opinion it is more "cliquey" than other schools and harder to make friends.

gkc4 couldn't be more wrong? Emory is very, very preppy....khakis and leather flips flops and polos are worn like every single day...not too many jocks ....defiantly cliquey but everyone gets along and its not like clique v clique...and def there is school spirit?

^^^ If I wear khakis, leather flipflops, and maybe a sweater vest would I still fit in or would I have to wear a polo?

You don't hafta dress like that to fit in, just wear what you want. Lots of kids just go with a relaxed look, like a T-shirt and jeans would be fine.

I think a good portion of the school are clean-cut preps. However, I've run across a good number of hot artsy types. There seem to be so many different sorts of people to just define as either "jocky" or "preppy" as a whole.

gkc4, why do you say most were rejected from their top choice?

It's a mixed bag. No one really cares. You'll find everything from sweatpants and sweatshirt to ralph lauren mannequins in your classes. It still surprises me how well everyone gets along despite the different backgrounds that everyone seems to come from.

because they all realize why they are their, i truly consider emory great. its not high school, no one gives a crap and chances are all the idiots you knew in HS were too dumb to get in so ur not gonna have your ideal unruly cliques

"why they are their"....certainly not because they know how to use the word "there"....LOL...just busting your chops......

yeah, I feel that its definitely mixed. I know people who do dress "preppy," but I feel like thats not the entire student body...everyone seems to get along pretty well...

I'm nervous! I only own one polo shirt and it's black which makes it less preppy! And I don't wear sandals very often! I don't think I'm going to fit in and I'm freaking out. Do you think I should not go anymore????? Oh god I don't like wearing khaki's either and I call them chino's! It's a good school but I don't think i can deal with the pressure of dressing like this!

Steven, relax lol. Fitting in shouldn't be a problem at Emory. Just be and dress like yourself. You don't have to conform lol. As long as you're confident, you should be able to fit in anywhere.

Do any of you go to Emory?

I go to Emory and let me just say...there's a little bit of all types of peope here, and 99.9% of the students don't care in the slightest what you're wearing. I've never worn khakis or polos, I'm definitely NOT preppy and certainly not a jock...I basically wear jeans and a t-shirt everyday...and I fit in perfectly well at Emory!
But seriously, you will see lots of different types of people at Emory. As an example, during my last exam this fall I noticed that while I was wearing jeans as usual, the person on my right was wearing pajamas and the guy on my left was in a full-on suit... a litte strange but not a big deal at all. Don't worry- you'll love Emory!

I wore pajamas every day of senior year, with the exception of the day I defended my thesis. It was great.

Your wardrobe is the last thing you should be freaking out about. There will be people who care a lot about clothing and appearances, and there will be people who don't.

33% are greek
33% have limited to no social life
the rest waiver somewhere in between.

Some students wear collared shirts to class every day while others wear t-shirts and sweats.

~40% of the school is southern but they seem like the minority compared to the crowd from the northeast.

There is a lot of diversity at the school but minorities tend to be very cliqueish

^ phaeth, are you a current student?

I go to Emory, I haven't really noticed a lot of preppy people. I'm from a very preppy, rich southern area so my view of preppy is sort of hardcore, not to sound annoying about it. By NO MEANS is Emory "very, very preppy"...look to Vanderbilt for that. Then compare the general Vanderbilt student body vs. Emory student body...you'll see what I'm talking about.

School spirit? You've got to be kidding me... I mean yeah a lot of people at Emory like the school, but compare Emory to any other southern college with a football team and we're a dead campus (i.e. Duke, UNC, UVa, Vanderbilt, all the major southern state schools).

And I agree with what others are saying. Emory students can be cliquey, but it's not exclusive. The rich students aren't going to look down upon other students, no one really cares what you wear, etc. However the minorities can be exclusively cliquey, especially the Korean internationals.

That's the impression I get. I'm not saying I know the entire freshmen student body, but a LARGE majority of people I know came to Emory because they didn't get into their top choice. Emory isn't called the "Ivy-Reject school" for nothing. I'm not trying to bash on Emory, I really like it, I'm just being honest with my opinion.

This is going to sound discriminatory and I'll probably get bashed for it, but after talking about with other Emory students, here's my two cents:

A lot of the people who apply to Emory ED and REALLY want to go are Jewish and from NY (Long Island specifically) and Florida. They tend to like Emory more than the average student because it's easier for them to find groups... they might think Emory is preppy because of the moderate amount of southern kids who go there :P

The quiet majority is a mix of normal students. You can find your niche if you look hard enough (although some are easier to find, like the alternative crowd).

"Forced diversity" can also describe Emory. Emory boasts that its student body is very diverse, but the minorities tend to stick together and there isn't a real meshing of the student body.

lol I love this topic.
I wear shorts and Js all day long. I actaully care about how I look lol...
I keep my kicks fresh. I am definately not a Khaki person. I wore it once for the interview i had over the summer and have to wear it for all of my basketball games~.

Yea I like GKC and hows hes honest and everything. I really could care less about Korean Internationals lol. I hate how these people always try to keep their own group of friends and no whites or others.

Hows da Gym there. Ima gonna take over da courts if I eva get in hahaha

BTW hows Emory party life like. And how often do you all go out of town to the City

BTW is basketball big over there. Yes I know it is D III,but is there lots of people going there?

The gym is nice. Nothing spectacular but nice.

Party life: Freshmen=frat row. If you join a frat you'll party with them, if not you'll have house parties or go clubbing/go to bars in Atlanta. Not all the freshmen party, it's a mixed bag, but if you like that you'll have no trouble.

Bball isn't too big. None of the sports are tbh.
