I’m a high school freshman, 1st semester just ended and I got a weighted gpa of 4.14 and an unweighted gpa of 3.32. What is the highest gpa I can attain (unweighted) by the end of my senior year of high school? Is it possible to get a 3.8 or 3.9?
This would be a simple question for your algebra class. Have you taken algebra yet? Unless I am forgetting something, even elementary school math should be enough to answer this question within a reasonable level of accuracy. However, jumping from a 3.32 GPA one semester to a 4.0 GPA all remaining semesters, while the best theoretically possible outcome, seems unlikely to actually happen.
The large difference between your weighted and unweighted GPA makes me think that you are taking a lot of honors or AP classes. I am concerned that you are taking very hard classes as a freshman, and getting mostly B’s. You should be striving to get more A’s than B’s. This might mean taking the advanced classes only in subjects that you are actually good at, or it might mean studying more hours.
In many subjects, but particularly in math, what you are going to learn next year will depend a LOT on what you are learning now, and what you learned last year. As such, it is very important to take math at the pace that you can handle, and definitely no faster.
Talk to your guidance counselor. It depends on things like: how your HS calculates GPA (our HS only uses final grades), if/how classes are weighted, how many classes you will take etc. Once you have this data you can use an online GPA calculator, EXCEL spreadsheet, or paper and pencil to figure it out yourself.
Unsolicited advice – get off of CC until junior year. Focus on academics, ECs, family, and friends for now and when the time comes study for standardized tests.
There are calculators GPA online that can help. It depends on how many classes you take. In general, for college applications usually classes like PE and Teachers Assistant are not included.
Since applications go out in the beginning of 12th grade, those final grades don’t make it into the application GPA. Depending on your target schools they may have you send senior year first semester grades.
That being said, my son has all As and 3 Bs. His uw GPA was 3.88.
My advice would be to work hard and a be thoughtful student. Be proactive and don’t procrastinate. In the end, there are lots of colleges that don’t require a 3.8.
“In the end, there are lots of colleges that don’t require a 3.8.”
Absolutely true. However, the schools that don’t require a 3.8 also don’t require taking AP classes as a freshman or sophomore.
Hypothetically speaking, if you get a 4.0 second sem, you would have a 3.66. And then if you got a 4.0 sophomore, jr, and senior year also, you could have a 3.92. Though, considering you got a 3.32, it does not seem feasible to get 4.0 every year for the rest of high school. That’s the best-case scenario. My recommendation is just to study and try to raise your GPA to a 3.65 UW maybe (cumulative).
