Hey guys,
I’m currently studying at UNSW Australia (double majoring in accounting and finance) and am thinking of going on an exchange to University of Connecticut in 2020, so I’ll be around 21 years old. Now I have a few questions:
- What is campus life like?
- How far away is New York City from campus?
- What is the closest city to UCONN?
- How are uni parties or is it not really a party place?
- Is college football big at uni? and if so, how much are tickets?
- How are dorms? Are there a lot of people who live on campus?
- Are there a lot of locals (American people) who live on campus? (I'm asking because over here at UNSW most people who stay on campus are all international students and it's not compulsory to stay on campus. I know some American unis make it compulsory for uni students to live on campus).
Thanks!
I can help with some of your questions. It’s a very bustly campus, big and spread out but set in a small town. NYC is about 2 1/2 hours; Boston is closer at around 1 1/2 hours. The nearest city is Hartford. There are a good number of parties on and off campus. Basketball is for sure their big sport. Hockey is decent. They do have a football team, but they play about 30 minutes away from campus, and they’re not a strong team. I would assume tix are free for students, but I do not know that for sure. There is a wide variety of dorms, and a lot of people live on campus. We live within 15 minutes and everyone we know that attends lives on campus. It is not compulsory to live on campus, and there are a lot of off campus apartments. Hope this helps.

@NiceGarry UCONN is a large and spread out college campus with a lot of school spirit. Based on your areas of study it seems like you may be taking classes at the business school. That is one of the strongest and more popular schools after engineering. You will find your “village” because there is really something for everyone. One recommendation is to consider a learning community, and I believe there are several with a business focus. They are dorms for those who share the same passion. Since you asked about NYC you should know that UCONN students get what is called a UPASS to travel free within CT. Many students travel from Storrs to Greenwich (closest CT city to NYC) and then buy a ticket to NYC from there which is much cheaper. However since it is public transportation the ride may be over 4 hours.
