What is your parents' state, territory, or province of legal residence?

I currently live in Colorado with my mother, but my father works in Ohio. What do I put for this question?

If you live in Colorado with your mom…you put Colorado. That is your legal residence.

If this is a question on the FAFSA, your non-custodial parent is NOT listed at all on the FAFSA.

If this is a question on the Profile, you should be completing the Profile with your mom’s info as the custodial parent (and thus Colorado would be the answer). Your non-custodial parent (your father) will complete a non-custodial parent Profile and HE will put Ohio for his legal residency.

Thanks, my parents are still married though so both have custody. Does he still need to fill out a non-custodial parent Profile?

If they are still married, no, but his income and assets will have be included when you fill out the parents’ sections of the Profile.

Is your father in Ohio only for work or are they separated? How do they file taxes, married filing jointly or married filing singly? If your father is only away for employment purposes, then you have to show both parents income and assets and file as married for FAFSA and CSS/Profile. If they are separated, then your father has to show his assets for the CSS/Profile as non-custodial. In other words, for Profile, they want to see both parents assets and income either as married or as one custodial and one non custodial parent. You cannot escape from having to show both your parents income for Profile.

He is only in Ohio for work. They file jointly. So would I still put Colorado?

Someone else will have to weigh in…but since you live in CO and you will graduate from a high school in CO and you live with your mom who lives in CO and presumably your dad comes HOME to CO…then CO would be the state of residence.

Do your parents own their home in CO? Does your father rent or own his home in OH?

If they own a home in CO and your father is away only for employment, like thumper1 says, CO appears to be the state of residence.

Also, are you applying to colleges in OH or CO and hope to get in state tuition? You may want to check U of Colorado polices for instate tuition and if you qualify, then CO it is.

Yeah, it should be CO because we own our house here and my dad is only renting in OH. Thanks everyone.
