<p>OP, I’m not sure about the types of ethernet cord, but I just bought whatever they had at target and it works fine. As for length, it depends on where your desk is in relation to the ethernet port. If it’s right next to it, short is okay. </p>
<p>Personally, I had a 25ft one which is way too long. However, I just rolled it up and tied it so most of the length was out of the way. A super long cord also allows you to run it along the sides of the room so no one will trip over it.</p>
<p>YoungMafia, if you want XBL you should definitely bring an ethernet cable. You’ll have to register the mac address, which takes a few hours, I think. You can’t play live over WiFi, and even if you have someone broadcasting the wired connection over a router, there’s going to be lag. Trust me, I know.</p>
<p>FWIW, I had a 25 foot cable, and it was only 2-3 feet too long. And it’s been the right length for every other house I’ve lived in since then.</p>

<p>Bring an ethernet cable. You will regret it if you don’t. Sometimes the wireless signal is not strong in all of the dorms and resnet runs much better than cruznet nine times out of ten. I only use wireless when I’m not in my room.</p>
<p>I’m using a super long cat 5 for my laptop and I have a shorter one I use for my desktop. I’d recommend bringing one of each length since they don’t take up much room. Also, bring some zipties. They make for great cable management ;)</p>

<p>The wireless is so bad in some areas of the dorms. I actually brought an extra ethernet cable so that people vising my room could access the internet. =/</p>
<p>There are also cases where the ethernet ports are only on ONE side of the room (this was in the Porter dorms) so unless you want to rely on wireless, you have to stretch a cord acrossss the room.</p>
<p>iluvnachos30: Shouldn’t matter if you bring a cat 5 or 6. I just have a ton of cat 5 cables lying around at home so that’s what I brought.</p>
<p>I would also recommend bringing a router to set up. I ran into the problem that my room only had one ethernet port period (single room) making it so I could only have one of my computers plugged in at a time.</p>
<p>Also, I’ve noticed with the wireless that it gets worse over break periods. When I first moved in for winter quarter (day before winter quarter started), I was not able to pick up any signal for cruznet in my Porter dorm. A week later, I had a very strong signal in my room. And here at College 10 for the summer, cruznet is very spotty and has been getting progressively worse as the summer over the past few weeks. I would assume College 10 has much better reception during the regular academic year.</p>
<p>If I remember right many of the dorms have splitters available, just ask the RA about that if you don’t want to buy a router.</p>

<p>What do you mean “use internet connection from home”? Do you mean to transfer your home internet service to school? No and I don’t know why you would want to do this. You already pay for internet access in your fees so it’s best to just use the school internet. Just don’t do anything illegal on it like torrenting copyrighted files ;). In fact, don’t torrent legal items either. There’s a 2GB bandwidth limit per day (upload only, not download).</p>
<p>If you’re having that much trouble with your home internet, then I would highly recommend not trying to do anything more than “plug and go” with the school internet. There is tech support on campus if you have any problems, though.</p>
<p>If you know for sure that you have wireless set up in your home then you may need to adjust your security settings. Perhaps the signal is not visible to computers that do not know the exact name of the network? Another issue you may be running into is the type of security. Is it WEP? WPA? My wireless adapter for my desktop would not see any network on WEP for some odd reason (most likely a faulty adapter, but I did not realize the problem until long after its warranty date). I had to set the security to WPA… which cause a problem with my old style DS which will only connect on WEP. There’s also MAC address filtering, but that shouldn’t prevent you from seeing the network.</p>
<p>There’s a whole slew of other issues that could be a problem. Hopefully AT&T can help you tomorrow since I can only speculate without seeing what equipment you have and tinkering with it myself XD</p>
<p>Anywho, as long as you’re on resnet (wired), the internet is wicked fast no matter where you are. Cruznet (wireless), on the other hand, is decent, but not anywhere near the excellent speeds you get with resnet.</p>
<p>ATT Routers/Gateways have the “Security Code” on the bottom near the barcode unless you’ve changed it.</p>
