I'm going to Hotchkiss, hence the username, and I was wondering what kind of backpacks students suggest. Also, I heard that it's good to bring totes for just carrying around stuff, so I was wondering what brand/kind students suggested.

Get one with straps so you can carry it on your back.

I don’t go to Hotchkiss, but I’m pretty sure you can’t go wrong with a Jansport, North face, or Dakine backpack.

What about LL Bean?

nope. Fine for middle school. You need something more durable. Worth the extra expense. Son had an entry level EMS backpack that lasted all four years at Choate. Cost about $60. They take alot of abuse.

You don’t have to have the perfect backpack with you on day one.
You could bring whatever backpack you used this year with you, then look around once you get to school and order your new backpack online.

I responded without consideration for where you are going. Hothkiss classes if I remember are all centralized and all under cover. The classes at Choate on the other hand are more spread out and the long distance walkng between some classes in extreme weather (rain snow, freezing rain) requires different consideration for backpacks, footwear, jackets, gloves etc.

The backpacks really do take a beating, especially during winter term. I have a north face pack and it works well. But show up fall term with whatever you have and buy accordingly.

Are you entering as a prep? Just wondering, because I’m going to be a new upper mid =]

When I revisited my host had a northface bag. So did a lot of other people. This is one reason why I will NOT buy a northface bag. Who wants to be a clone? Buy something that you like.

Anywayz, see you in a couple weeks!!!

Most of the time, I don’t use anything at all. I normally only have two (at most three) classes in a row so I just carry the textbooks and a notebook to class. School’s in CA so no rain/snow.
