I'm going to Tufts in the Fall, and I need an ethernet cable. I don't really mind how much it costs. I just want something that's as fast and reliable as it can be. I saw this one on the Tufts bookstore: Gold X 25' Snagless UTP Ethernet Cable ( Div 72) - Premium cabling for category 5 and 5e application rated for 350 Mhz/1Gbps communications PVC 4-pair stranded UTP with integral strain-relief and RJ45 male connectors.
Does this look good? Is there anything better out there? Thanks. :)

Save your money so you can buy hoodies and t-shirts, and buy your cables at monoprice.com.

There’s also wifi in most dorms now. If you do need one, definitely don’t buy an ethernet cable at the bookstore; there are tons of websites online that are way cheaper for anything that doesn’t say “Tufts” on it (and even probably some things that do).

I heard wi-fi in my dorm (Hill Hall) is kind of iffy, especially if you’re in the middle of the dorm (like me). The ethernet cable at the bookstore was actually really cheap ($9), so that’s not so bad. Has anyone tried videochatting? I’m sure you have. Is that feasible through the ethernet connection?

Let me tell you something, Master of Penguins, the T3 line that Tufts uses is so frickin’ fast that you’re unlikely to notice.

I’m CAT5ed in, and it’s not unusual to have sustained download speeds of multiple MB/Sec. The quality of the cable only starts to matter over longer distances, and even then, there isn’t much variation from cable to cable. Get the cheapest thing you can find.

Hi Dan! (It feels weird because, now that I’m in the Class of 2015 group on a certain top-secret social networking site, I feel as if you’re everywhere all at once).
Frickin’ fast… NICE! That sounds pretty sweet to me. I was going to be pleased with moderately fast, but that’s a joy to hear. Thanks so much for your answer. I, honestly, knew nothing about ethernet cables, but now I’m all set with that info in mind Now back to conquering those penguins.

You should find me on Twitter, too. :)
