I am a transfer student about to apply to colleges but I have an issue. My GPA dropped from a 3.2 to about a 2.9 last semester due to a personal family tragedy. I feel this will affect my chances for schools and I wanted to know if economics would be an easier major to get into schools with than business administration. My goal was to get a business degree with a concentration in finance but to get into my dream school I will sacrifice my major if I don't have a chance with getting in as business.

The school I was hoping to attend was Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. So would it be easier to get into Cal Poly as a business or economics major? Also does the trend apply to most schools?

From my own experience, Business is a more impacted major than Economics in most schools. But that doesn’t say much. You need to research your target schools (SLO) and look at their admission statistics per major. See if any majors are impacted.

I can tell you that a 2.9 will make in virtually impossible to get in to either program at Cal Poly. Both majors fall under Orfalea’s business program, and last year had a average transfer GPA of around 3.8 for both. While I don’t mean to discourage you, Cal Poly SLO is an exceptionally difficult school to get into compared to the rest of the CSU system, and especially so for the programs that fall under Orfalea (Business, Econ, IT).

Source: I just transferred to Cal Poly as a business major.

EVILteddie: since you just transferred into Poly, does econ fall under business when applying, or does econ fall under a different major than business does on the application

Also, do you know if they do any sort of rounding when it comes to gpa. For instance if my gpa were a 2.97, would they round it to 3.0 or not

Econ major is a separate major from Business for application purposes, but both are part of the Orfalea College of Business, along with Industrial technology. I’m not certain if they round the GPA, but I would assume that they don’t since the CSU application wants the GPA listed in a X.XX format.
