How competitive are economics and Business majors as transfers? I want to apply for fall of 13! And also how big are they on major pre reqs I’ll be missing like 2 by the time I apply??

As Poly’s website states, you must have all of the outlined courses done for Transfer Selection Criteria. If you don’t have them, you will have 0 chance of admission. I suggest getting all of the classes they specify as required, out of the way. Best of luck! Check out their data on the website regarding the college of business. Just keep your GPA as high as you can…it’s a numbers game among applicants, assuming you’ve taken all the right classes.

You mean the ones listed on assist.org? I will be missing one or two by Spring 2013 and don’t want to spend another year at my CC!

I read that all of the reqs must be completed by Spring to be Competetive! I’m at a 3.62 right now and I’m most likely I’ll apply as an Econ major!

Not ASSIST but Calpoly.edu. [How to Apply - Admissions - Cal Poly](<a href=“Cal Poly Admissions”>Cal Poly Admissions)

My bad I meant on that link!! I will be missing only one or two !! I should raise my gpa around the 3.7 and 3.8 area!! What do you think my chances for Econ would be??

Again, please see Cal Poly’s Website…better yet I copied and pasted because you may not have understood where I was referring to repeatedly…Cal Poly is VERY explicit in explaining you MUST complete the bold courses prior to your admission. I personally know many who have been rejected because of a deficiency that was specifically outlined on the website. Cal Poly uses a computerized system that ensures the courses specified are stated as “will be complete by Fall of intended term of enrollment”. If you do NOT have a bold course, you will NOT be admitted…it’s pretty simple as the number of applicants is very high and admission is competitive enough among qualified applicants who meet all requirements…

COURSES IMPORTANT FOR ECONOMICS MAJOR:
Courses listed below are important in applying to this major and you maximize (but not guarantee) your chance of selection. Fall Term applicants must complete these units by the Spring, not Summer, preceding their term of enrollment to receive consideration in the admission selection process.

Courses listed in bold are required for selection to this major. You will not be competitive in the selection process without them! Completing all listed courses, again, maximizes your competiveness in the selection process, but doesnt guarantee selection.

NOTE: Use [Welcome to ASSIST](http://www.assist.org) to identify the articulation (course equivalencies) between Cal Poly and California Community Colleges for these courses. Out-of-state and four-year transfer students may have to compare their catalog course descriptions with Cal Polys catalog to identify the equivalent course content for these courses. Cal Poly is unable to evaluate transcripts prior to selection.

Yeah, that’s the link I saw last night. I was just wondering if I can get lucky and get in with a decent gpa(3.7-3.8) and applying to a
Less impacted major

There is no “getting lucky” as the applicants chosen already meet the specified requirements and are lucky to get in after being fully qualified. Apply under whatever major you want but accept the fact that you may not be able to change, depending on many different factors. Trying to beat the system is frustrating to the school as there is a reason for their strict admission guidelines. I suggest playing by their rules.

So you never seen anyone been accepted with a missing pre req?

No, you see people get waitlisted with higher gpa and all required and recommended courses completed. Doesn’t matter if the major is not as impacted as other majors, it’s still impacted. If you do not have your courses completed then your application will automatically be kicked out.

I should confirm this with a slo counselor because it would suck for "staying at a CC for one missing major pre req. course!

Call Cal Poly’s admission center or be sure your CC is well in the know with Poly’s admission policies because YES if you are missing one class that is BOLD they will NOT admit you. As the other poster also specified, rejected and waitlisted candidates meet all requirements and have a high GPA, as the qualified pool is already competitive enough for every single major. I have known people who apply and get rejected and wonder why only to see they did not follow directions, as well as people who applied and met all requirements get rejected. Apply if you wish but call Poly directly and talk with your counselor. It is frustrating to be at a CC so if you really can’t wait, apply to a different school that does not have this policy as admissions are only getting tougher with budget cuts. It’s harsh but true. There is a reason for their policy…once you’re in it’s a huge struggle to get classes you could have already completed at your CC. Every transfer is eager to be at their desired school so if you really want to just be done, you may have to settle for your backup and either stay there or apply to Poly once you meet every single REQUIRED course. To make yourself more competitive, instead of just meeting the required bold courses, also take the recommended courses while you take that extra year, if you want Poly bad enough. It will only help to have more done in the long run. I PROMISE.

My friend got into Berkeley but rejected by Cal Poly with a 3.9+ GPA. Why? Missing a SPEECH class!

Thank you for posting that Ben. I know so many similar situations as well. Poly doesn’t kid around when they say they require something. It’s best to just put in the time and work and apply when you meet the requirements like everyone else. Otherwise it wastes your time and money. If you really feel like you have a reason as to why you should be admitting despite not meeting bolded courses, talk with admissions and I’m sure they’ll tell you if you have a reason to be excepted from the rules–this is only the case with recruited athletes to my knowledge but I am not on staff so I don’t want to speak formally.
