What makes up the top ten percent at your school?

I have a 3.86 unweighted and 4.43 weighted. I am 40th out of 608. How about other schools?

There are basically 3 GPAs making up the top 10%, because it’s the rising sophomore class. They are: one person with a 4.583, a number of people with a 4.5, and some with something lower, but I’m not sure what.

At my D’s school the top 10% seems high. She believes the top 10% is 4.76-5.0 W/ 3.98-4.0 UW (her best friend has just made it in the top 10% and those lower end scores are hers)- all of these kids with at least 6 APs at the end of junior year - a handful with 8 or more. It is a competitive area with many highly educated families with resources and an emphasis on education. The top 10-15 students (3-5%) are all hundredths of a percent from each other and there are multiple 5.0w/4.0uw so I am not sure how the school will determine val. and sal. I guess they are counting on some slacking off in senior year after acceptances are in so that there will be clear #1 and #2.

D is in the 10-15% (currently around 13% but this will change as late finals are calculated in --kids who were away at state’s, FBLA convention (I believe), concussions with delayed final, kids who were “sick” on finals day and then had a vacation planned. - etc…) She will likely go lower and maybe out of the top 15%. There is a large contingency of top kids who take late finals so that they can know the questions ahead of time and have more study time after the end of year rush. We know of at least 2 kids who took their finals Friday - a full 10 days after finals for everyone else - one student said he was too sick to do finals (but then took the ACT and then went to the beach with friends) and then had a prearranged family vacation - he will take it next week and he is in the top 3%. This is one of the cheating epidemics in our area and last year and this it has extended to finals - thus holding up the final rankings for everyone.

  • she has a 4.65w/ 3.94 uw -- It stinks for her because she loses out out some merit scholarships that require top 5% or top 10% of class although she has benefited by being in classes with some really brilliant and driven classmates.
