Hi parents and UB students, can you please spare your time to post the name of carrier that UB accept? I would really appreciate if someone can tell me if Fidelis Care cover both Erie county and NYC Queens county. Thank you.

Clueless - That is a question better answered by your insurer. UB will automatically bill you for their insurance until you apply for a waiver that has to meet their guidelines. You can probably look into it now. If you have a list of questions, Fidelis will answer them, enabling you to provide for the waiver. UB does not make this easy, past discussions opined that there is an incentive to put as many students as possible on the school plan.

If you do not have Aetna, it will be a pain in the ass. Be prepared to call Sub Board I. According to their website, the waiver opens up mid-July.

Just an update, the waiver is up at [url=http://subboard.com/insurance/]Student Medical Insurance/url. Pretty much everyone gets audited since they want to catch everyone that they can insure so no need to freak out unless they actually deny the waiver.

Thank you whldch and jojoyohan, I was just wondering if these are all the requirements that UB ask from the private health insurance:

Will you have insurance for a non-emergency while on campus? (Many emergency-only plans consider illnesses/injuries such as strep throat and a sprained ankle to be non-emergency and not covered.)
Does your plan cover the cost of adult immunizations, such as those required for medical, dental and nursing students prior to treating patients?
Does your plan cover you for office/specialist visits in the Buffalo, New York area (ER and Urgent Care do not qualify for waiver)?
Does your plan cover you for mental illness in the Buffalo, New York area ((ER and Urgent Care do not qualify for waiver)
Does your plan cover you for x-rays and lab work in the Buffalo, New York area?
Do you have prescription coverage? Name of prescription company if different: _________________________
Does your plan have a high deductible before benefits are applicable? If so what is the deductible? $_______

They are going to ask you to give them your insurance details and self identify that you have the coverage that they want. Then they will basically ask your insurance company to confirm that you have insurance through them and that it includes the necessary coverage. It’s not too difficult and if you aren’t sure either your parents will know if the insurance is through them or you can just call your insurer and they’ll help you out.

Since I don’t have drugs coverage on my medical insurance, UB denied my D’s waiver.
She has to pay her student medical insurance in the Fall.
Questions: can she use student loans money to the student medical insurance?

It may be easier and less expensive to look into a drug rider on your policy. We had the same issue and complained about the mandate. Like many others on this board we were told that nobody ever complains about this requirement. Chances are good that your coverage is superior to what is offered by Aetna.

I just called and I was told that they required me to fax in my waiver, and I’m not sure how to fax in the online form. Did anyone else get this? My insurance provider is fidelis care.

My friend told me to just try a different person.

Jeff, the request for waiver is online and is not faxed. If Aetna selects you for audit (and you’ll know this by checking your UB email regularly), FidelisCare will not comply without a written request from you. In that event, you’ll have to fax a written request to FidelisCare asking them to confirm the data that Aetna Student Health requires. They will fax it on their own letterhead back to Aetna (a sample is on the first SubBoard1 page describing the waivers).

Fax number for FidelisCare is 718-896-6832. Fax number for Aetna is 860-907-4730.

If anyone has any problems/questions with getting through the audit process, I’d recommend emailing the SB1 program director at UB as she’s very helpful and responds quickly. IIRC, her name is Cathy Engelhard-Ellis.

Alright, so I’ve called Fidelis four times now on four different days. Twice they have told me that they can only answer such information by fax (once again, I have no idea how to fax things/what to fax), and the other two times they told me they would have someone call me in the next business day (no one ever called me). They told me that once they fill out the form, they will fax the information to the school (instead of Aetna). I’m kind of stuck right now, does anyone have the same problem or experience with this problem?

You’d be better off logging onto your insurance account and seeing exactly what your coverage is, because that’s what the people at UB will do to confirm your coverage. We did that a week or two ago just to make sure our deductible was in line with these policies. You will need to confirm that you have coverage outside your local area, that there is drug coverage, and that if there is a deductible for out of network that it is $1000 or less. All this is on the link given to you above.

Is it possible to have it waived one year and denied the next? This is what happened to me.

Just to add fuel to the fire:
Had my on-line waiver request denied ($3000 deductible on a high deductible plan), so I submitted a written waiver on 7/30/12 for the "Board " to consider. Just called SBI and found that after two weeks the Board has not met yet. So my request and bunch of others are just sitting. SBI appears to be stuck in the middle on this.

So my question is: Does anyone know who is on this “Board”??? I am livid about this and would really like to give someone a large piece of my mind if they are going to demand $2000 the day before classes start.

We had the same issue a year or two ago and were suspicious of this Board. We were also very suspicious when we were told that my appeal and complaint (over the drug rider) was the first ever complaint and that in their experience everyone they ever spoke to was i n favor of it. Yet there are several complaints on this site.

The deductible requirement i think is new, one of the many changes that keep occurring to get as many students on their plan. There was something posted while back on some site about the incentives to get kids on these campus plans that are really less than ideal.

Did your requirements change at all from last year? I’m still trying to figure out why my Medicaid plan doesn’t meet their requirements for this year, but was successfully waived last year.
Also, is it not possible to change the amount of unsub loans I’m taking out if I’ve already accepted less than the maximum amount they’re offering me? A few unexpected things happened to my bill and I’m now realizing I need more aid than I thought.

The deductible requirement is just ridiculous. I had mine waived last year with the same insurnace company and now they want me to pay $2000. This is out right ridiculous.
