What percentage of applicants at any particular college have NOT shown "interest"?

I read somewhere that only 20% of Bowdoin applicants have not shown any demonstrated interest in terms of visiting, interviews, etc. I feel like this number is extremely low, as many students can’t afford to fly out, and many more students apply to as many top schools as possible without showing much interest to any particular one. Can anyone verify this?

I ask because I’m nervous. My Bowdoin interviewer never showed up, and I’m not sure if I still have time to fly out and visit because I can’t fly out until February.

When did this happen? I’m surprised they haven’t contacted you to apologize for missing the interview. If you haven’t heard from them, then contact the interviewer and ask them to reschedule.

I don’t think they expect all students to visit if they live far away. They know not everyone can afford that for example.

However, its 2011-2012 common data set indicates that “level of applicant’s interest” is “not considered”.

[Common Data Set (Bowdoin, )](Common Data Set | Bowdoin College)

I tried to contact them via email to let them know but got no response. I guess I should have tried calling them, too, but I feel it is too late now because they don’t allow interviews after December.

I’m am fairly positive that Bowdoin is very pro-interest oriented.

Moving this thread as it is mainly about Bowdoin. If you want to start a general thread about showing interest and college admissions, do so on the Admissions forum (although it is a FAQ).

Well, this is the page I was referring to. It says that 22-23% of Bowdoin’s applicant pool are “stealth applicants”, or have not shown interest in Bowdoin.

[13.8% of regular decision applicants admitted to Class of 2016 — The Bowdoin Orient](13.8% of regular decision applicants admitted to Class of 2016 — The Bowdoin Orient)

Again, 22% seems so low…I feel like more people would apply to Bowdoin (or ANY school) and not show interest.

I think that number’s realistic. Showing interest can be just putting your name on the mailing list. It’s pretty easy to do.

The article mentions that Bowdoin’s Admissions team can spot these “stealth applicants” by seeing if the applicant submitted their application around the 30th of December. Since I applied to a number of schools in four different counties, each with a different application process (and deadlines), I ended up applying to Bowdoin at the last minute (not literally, just on the 1st of January), even though I made the decision to apply in late October when I visited, had an interview and info session.

My question is, will I look like a “stealth applicant” because I applied on the last day?

I think that there is a difference between having Bowdoin added on your Common App list on the 30th and having Bowdoin’s app officially submitted on the 30th. I’m assuming they are referring to the former, as I submitted everything last minute, too. I wanted to make sure there wasn’t anything I needed to add.

Hi Aerobug,

I do alumni interviewing for Bowdoin, and the clear expectation is that we make contact quickly and make every effort to connect with a student. If your interviewer is unresponsive you should make contact with the Admissions office. They may arrange for an alternative interviewer, but you will at least demonstrate that you didn’t skip the interview on your end and that you are interested.

Best of luck
