So, go!

University of Arizona’s BFA. My D was admitted to this great program but declined because of their cut system.

My D feels the same. She was interested in that program, but wants to make sure both she and the school are fully invested in each other for the duration. I actually had forgotten about that one.

Does SUNY Purchase have a cut program? Another thread implied that it might, but this one is definitely on my D’s list, so that would be good to know.

Well many schools have juries for the first two years and if you fail your juries, you will not be invited back.

But there is a difference between a jury and a cut. If all kids are progressing- all will pass the jury. A cut implies that they INTEND to eliminate a certain # of students. It seems true “cuts” are becoming less common- I think schools like Emerson and DePaul had them for years, and have now changed.

Exactly. D isn’t worried about juries. It’s more programs that have a very specific cut process after “x” amount of time, only so many candidates move on.

I agree- we had the same plan

I’m surprised no one has really weighed in on this? Is it some theatre school secret that no one discusses or something?

Only U of Arizona has a cut policy that I know of. SUNY Purchase doesn’t. Most schools have eliminated them.

Cal State Fullerton does, but that might be only for MT.

We looked at a few BA to BFAs with jury systems. My sense was that it was to give the school the option to eliminate people who lack the necessary work ethic or the ability to work collaboratively.

Anonymom, I think that approach somewhat makes sense. My D is at an arts school, and knows a gal from this year who auditions VERY well, but is a nightmare to work with. I can see how a such a process can be beneficial for a school.

However, it sounds like some of the accounts of BA to BFA schools and “cut” schools, it can be downright terrifying for some of the kids to be fearful for their spots.

Such an interesting paradigm.

CC ought to give itself a bit of pat on the back as I can’t help but think that all the negativity brought to light about cut programs on here has had some impact in getting schools to rethink them. In response to your question, the main schools known for them like DePaul and Emerson have rolled them back. Point Park does not have cut program per se but what they do instead is admit everyone as a BA and there is a later decision about acceptance into the BFA versus continuing as a BA. I believe there are some other schools like that as well.
