• GPA Unweighted/Weighted: N/A
• Rank: N/A

Subjective:
• Interviews: Accepted were okay. Choate was my best and my interviewer and I really connected. Andover was also really good. The Exeter lady expressed no interest in me. IDRK how my Groton interview went because my Groton interviewer went to Andover and I think I asked her way too many questions about her life at Andoevr and what she thought about Andover.
• Essays: Accepted were okay. I poured my heart and soul into Andover and Choate aka my top choices. Exeter and Groton were pretty good.
• Math Rec: IDRK. My math teacher is kinda nice to everybody so idrk how he feels about all his students. But I participate a lot in his class.
• English Rec: No clue. My English teacher is really hard on us students but I do really well in her class in comparison to everybody else. Her class is a lot of public speaking.
• Personal/Extracurricular Rec: Okay? My music teacher wrote me one but she is happy with me sometimes but gets really mad when I miss her lessons for other commitments.
• Principal/Counselor Rec: Really good. I was really troublesome back in sixth grade so I interacted with my counselor a lot. She knows me really well and has talked with me a lot throughout my middle school years.
• Sports (if any): Volleyball and Track
• Instruments (if any): Piano, Oboe
• Other ECs (if any): Art (I’m pretty good and I’ve won tons of awards.)
• Hook: No idea. Oboe I guess? Not a lot of oboe players out there.

Location/Person:
• State or Country: New Jersey
• Current School Type: Public
• Ethnicity: Asian American
• Gender: Female
• Grade Applying For: 9
• Age: 13
• Financial Aid/Full Pay: Full Pay

Strengths: Oboe player I guess. I also speak three languages aka English, Mandarin, and Spanish pretty fluently. I’m also really good at art. The position I play in volleyball is also really important and not a lot of people play it.

Weaknesses: Asian lol and I haven’t won super big awards in the past two years. I also guess my interviews weren’t consistently good. I don’t really think I have a hook.

Why do you think you were accepted/rejected/waitlisted?
I know there’s tons of talented people out there so maybe I’m just not as good as I think I am? Maybe it was the interviews or recs? Essays? I sent follow up emails to all of my interviewers but the ones at Choate, Andover, and Groton never replied to me. I’ve tried contacting people from Choate and Groton but I have never gotten responses before.

I applied for boarding and I really want to go to Andover, Groton, or Choate. They offer opportunities and courses that I really look forward to that are not offered at schools such as St. Andrew’s and Blair. Also Blair and St. Andrew’s don’t have really good volleyball programs and are a bit too close to home. What can I do to possible increase my chance on the wait list or get off of it? If that’s not possible, what should I do? I know that wait list offers can come over the summer but I have to reply to St. Andrew’s and Blair by April 10th. Is it possible for me to commit to one of these schools but then drop it if I receive an offer from Andover, Groton, or Choate? I really want to make it into one of these schools.

Love the school that loves you and if you want to remain no the waitlist please check the waitlist thread linked below, it offers all the information necessary for you to gain a basic understanding of the waitlist, furthermore, it is important to realize that chances of getting off a waitlist for anyone is extremely low.

You know, @ilovepeppapig … the BS Gods had something else in mind. File it under : Sometimes things happen for a reason … Congrats- SAS and Blair are wonderful schools and you should be very proud!!

Here’s the drill :

If you receive a WL decision from your first choice school and an acceptance from another school- the steps are pretty simple:

  1. Accept a place on the WL via email with Delivery and Read Receipts.

  2. Schedule a Revisit Day and put the WL school OUT OF YOUR MIND for now. Go to Revisit Day and have a great time.

You’ll have one month for the WL to shakeout and to make a decision about the other school . If you want to go the distance with the WL school ( WITHOUT jeopardizing the other school ) you’ll have until A9. On A8 have your PARENT call the WL school and ask to speak to the DOA. Tell WL school that you have to act on an acceptance from another school before the deadline but you’d like to check WL status ( one last time ) before you do. If they tell you that they’re NOT going to the WL or they don’t expect much movement- thank them and have them remove your name from the WL.

It’s time to MOVE ON unless you choose to stay on the WL. If WL school miraculously does come through ( after A10 ) you’ll have to break your commitment with the other school and forfeit your deposit (which is NOT a mere bag of shells, by the way ) . Personally, I could never take this route because I’m waaay too frugal and I like closure .

I’m also big on keeping commitments- but that’s just me. So- now we’re one or two days away from the deadline…

  1. Now that you’ve given the WL time to play out ( and you can walkaway and never wonder because you’ve seen it through to the end… ) : Have your parent call the school ( you’ll be attending ) and tell them the deposit check is on it’s way via FedEx.

All the best and good luck.

You have been accepted into some amazing schools. Schools kids I know would love to attend. I highly recommend that you don’t pine away for schools that didn’t accept you. Go to revisit days and choose the school that you like the most.

The actual title of this thread is “I Got into Two Great Schools! How Will I Ever Choose?” Congratulations!

I concur with the wise parents above. Love the school that loves you!
In addition: You mention volleyball as a reason, but have you researched your schools? Groton is the last place you want to be for volleyball. This was the first season that they even fielded a Varsity team, and they finished with 2-10 (16%) record.

Honestly, I don’t get why Andover, Groton, and Choate are so interesting to you and St. Andrews is not. From everything I have heard about it St. Andrews is an incredibly amazing school. Dig deep and make sure you are not chasing the name brand when it comes to Andover, Groton, etc. Also realize that while those schools may offer courses you are interested in it’s not possible to take all the electives you want while still fitting in the courses you are required to take and all the EC’s you may want to do. My guess is that any great boarding school will have plenty of selection for you.

@GoatMama I do believe that these schools are good. It’s just the tuition for these two schools are quite a stretch for my parents and we did not apply for financial aid because not all schools were need-blind. Furthermore, they do not offer opportunities to study abroad which I really want. My local public school is really bad and I want to go to one of the schools I applied for but the results did not come out as hopeful as I wanted it to be.

@dogsmama1997 Yes I agree that both are great schools and I am not chasing the name brand. It just happens that I really want to study abroad and schools like SAS and Blair do not offer these opportunities. My grandparents were both diplomats and I really like such a career. Also, I’ve mastered three languages but want to master French and I’ve learned from experience that true cultural immersion is the best way to learn.

Now I’m confused. Are you implying that Groton, Choate, and Andover are cheaper to attend than SAS and Blair? That can’t possibly be true.

I’m not sure what you mean by “these schools are good.” Academically, they are all good. Volleyball-wise, some are, some are not, but all are worse than your typical large public school. You always can (and should) play club if volleyball is part of your future plans. And you should not choose a school based on just one feature - whether a sport, a study-abroad program, or something else. Just my $0.02.

@GoatMama I agree with the advice. I’m not sure if I can continue playing club as a boarder but I have considered it. And yes, they are more expensive. This year, SAS tuition is $62,000 and so is Blair. My parents were hoping for me to go to a school that cuts at the $60,000 price. In addition, do you know if it is possible to apply for financial aid at a school after getting in?

No- not ever considered unless something catastrophic happened- like a parent dying or something.

MODERATOR’S NOTE:
As indicated above, there is a WL thread. At this point, I can’t imagine any unique questions relating to WL that require 87 million separate threads, so all discussion should happen there. Closing.
