what sold the deal for you?

don't list a list, i'm talking about the final thing you looked at before you chose.

Applied Math - Math - Graduate Schools - Education - US News and World Report

UCLA > MIT > Caltech for applied math what what *****es

not that i got into mit and caltech or even applied, but berkeley was a mere 8th

lol that’s funny because I’m also applied math and, although I chose Berkeley for many other reasons, I looked at the ratings very differently than you.

I noticed that the “Applied” part of “Applied Math” is barely even there at the undergraduate level. So I looked at the following rankings:

[Rankings - Math - Graduate Schools - Education - US News and World Report](http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-mathematics-programs/rankings)

And determined the general ranking for the graduate math program, although not really indicative of much, would be more indicative of the undergraduate Applied Math program than the graduate Applied Math would be. (Because at the graduate level the “Applied” part of Applied Math is MUCH heavier than it is at the undergraduate level.)

lol

Anyways, it doesn’t really matter because no matter what way you look at it we go to a top 10 institution. :DDDDDDDDDD

CONGRATS!

What are you hoping to specialize in for your application?

But what sold the deal for me was Berkeley’s environment, culture, history, etc. (To be honest, the school is a well-rounded perfect fit for me.) I am hoping to become a research professor in development economics and I hope to run an NPO and so… Berkeley was obviously the choice for me.

I chose UCLA because…well it’s UCLA man!

becuase I got a deal for room+food+parking in westwood for $600/mo!

wow mckman…where?

landfair…the best part is the parking!!

I chose UCLA because:
It was the cheapest out of all my options.
The opportunites for internships in the second-largest city in the country seem limitless.
Since you linked to the US News site, I am pleased to see that UCLA has a high-ranked program in Comparative Politics. I’m hoping to make that my concentration in the Political Science major once I start this fall.
And, in the end, it simply grew on me.

mikei, i was already leaning heavily towards LA because of location, i want to specialize in economics too!

I chose UCB because, as I stated in another thread, UCLA made it IMPOSSIBLE for me to do anything I wanted while UCB is being surprisingly open about everything. It sucks too, because I was really digging everything about UCLA.

what do you mean they made it impossible for you to do anything you wanted?

What sold it for me? After 6 months of ridiculous, objective research, campus tours, and comparisons between LA, Cal, & SB, it was this…

The gasp of delight and brimming tears when I saw the “Congratulations!” banner on the UCLA letter… my heart told me what I really wanted!

Cheesy but true.

just out of curiosity, why do those rankings matter when they’re graduate school rankings…

Arrowheadd,

They don’t REALLY matter. They just make us feel good about the schools we chose. Lol :D

Graduate school rankings are a good indication of the strength of any given department/faculty and the quality of research available to undergrads.

And those graduate students will be your GSIs at Berkeley.

Well…

Firstly, I was admitted to the Music History major in the MUSICOLOGY department (different from the Herb Alpert School of Music). I know I had applied for the music department/school of music because every other school I got admitted to said I was in their music department. When I emailed the adviser for the school of music about the confusion, he basically said,“Whoops, too bad, lol” and that in order to transfer to the school of music I would have to audition in the WINTER to be admitted in the fall of 2011 (if I even passed the audition anyway). I tried to look at the positives and ask if there were any classes in the musicology department I could take that would transfer over to the music department (I was not prepared to spend a year doing nothing). The only ones were some basic theory classes and the music ensembles, which give priority to the MUSIC department students (guaranteeing that I would not join).

Once again I tried to find the positives. I emailed the psychology department to see if I could double major in psych. I figured, since I have all the pre reqs done (I was originally a psych major), I could do two majors. Personally, I thought this was a win win and almost made me forget that I had to wait an entire year to start music. Once again, “Nope, lol”. In order to even study psychology, I had to originally apply as a psych major. In essence, if I wanted to study psychology, I would have to go through the entire UC app process. Needless to say I was bummed. Everything about UCLA looked substantially more professional than Cal.

But, waiting a year doing nothing? No thanks UCLA. At Cal I go in undeclared and can even do two majors as long as the pre reqs are done.

yeah you can only do psych if you were admitted as a pre-psych major. that sucks about your music major though. it’s too bad that they’re so specific about certain things =l
