you may or may not know, but I am indeed fretting whether to take the test again or not. I have a 92 percentile for the ssat. I can retake in January, but I have to work on the essays AND a music Cd. What do you think is considered "safe" for top tiered schools (sps, andover, etc.)? Is 92 enough for a score? Some say mid 80s, some say mid 90s. I personally think mid 80s to mid 90s is enough. You guys?

I remember reading somewhere a score of above 95 in all 3 sections is necessary if you attempt to get in on almost-academic ability only. I suppose a 85-90+ is sufficient for someone with an EC with long history.

Folks, stop worrying about the scores that are 80 or above. You don't need a 95 in all 3 sections to get into some of the most selective schools. Last year there were several students with 99s who got rejected from many places. Please don't obsess about a number, and try to show schools WHO you really are, not just that you obtained a certain test score.

I would say it depends on the rest of your application. If some of your grades are a little bit on the lower side, I would try and shoot for the 90's to show schools that your grades don't tell the full story. If the rest of your application is great, an 85+ would be fine.

Do noy worry about SSAt too much. Last year I got 97 percentile overall. My GPA in middle school was perfect(straight As for all three years). Everybody believed that I would get admission from everywhere. But.... I was rejected by Exter and Andover, I was waitlisted on Choate, Groton, and Hotchkiss. I was accpted by St. Mark's, Middlesex,
Concord, and Taft. One of my best friends got 89 percentile and she was accepted by Exter even though her GPA was not as good as mine.
SSAT is not everything! Just try to be reasonably good. If your ssat is over 85 percentile, I would not worry about it. But make sure all the three sections score better be balanced. For example, not like 97%, 57%, 93%.. .

hmm freshie got a low score on math, i think. it looks like a weakness if all arent balanced. especially since it's math and exeter is known for their good math students

Sorry, I disagree that absolute balance is a must. While getting 90s on two out of three sections, and 20 on the third, would probably be detrimental, I don't think that getting 90s on two of three, and 70s on the third would be so bad, if your overall is in the 80s.

My son was accepted into Exeter with 85%. You should ask the admission office for the official statistics. Each school provides the average SSAT score for the incoming freshmen.

The thing with boarding school is that SSAT score wields only the minor power on the admission. The score only delivers you to the entrance door. And then they look at the "whole picture." What kind of family you come from, where you live, what activities (mainly sports) you play, what you say during interviews are all important parts of the admission criteria, because they are trying to build a diverse and dynamic class full of interesting kids. So once you have the minimum score down, you shouldn't worry too much.
