I did all the required transfer courses, have a great GPA, and live in the city of the school I want to go to. I applied and got denied because there was just no room. It is the only school that offers me degree. My husband and I moved here two years ago BECAUSE I wanted to go to this CSU. So what do I do now? I have no more classes to take. Do I wait a year and try again? What if I am denied again? WTH are those of us who did everything right supposed to do! I just want to go to school... is that so hard?

Maybe a little more information would help us give you better advice. What was your GPA and major? Even 4.0’s with all prereqs completed can be denied in highly impacted majors. How many units have you completed? Also, some colleges accept Spring and Fall admissions, so you don’t have to wait a full year at many schools. Both IGETC and major prereqs were completed? Knowing your major will help, because some schools have alternative majors that are not impacted but close enough in subject matter to maintain your interest.

Degree is bachelors in Social Work. Degree is not impacted, school just had too many applicants. They do not offer Spring transfers. Gpa 3.67 IGETC and major prerequisite done. Completed 68 units. Gpa required for the degree is 2.0

I suggest you call the department directly to find out why they deny you. Having no room is simply not good enough to convince anyone in this case. Even for impacted majors, they should have at least a set of rules to follow in terms of admitting students. They may rank applicants base on GPA/extra curriculum…etc.

I did call them upon denial. They told me that I did everything right but that there just wasn’t any room. They said this year they had 70,000 applicants.

Maybe you should consider this as a blessing in disguise (might not feel it now, but eventually you might think so). You like social work as a major, but it isn’t a very lucrative field of study – job market is poor and pay is pretty low throughout the career of a social worker. Possibly you should consider a change in majors.

I agree with Intparent. I’d consider finding a different major and seeing if that helps. Can you register for single classes without formally applying for admission? If you can afford to pay for a class or two at a time and do well, maybe you can decide to matriculate later on. I spent 2 semesters at a (NYS) university taking 2 courses each term, matriculated the fall of my 2nd year (so I could apply for aid), and graduated 3 semesters after that.

Agree with intparent because I work daily with MSW interns who are disappointed to leave our facility because they’ve finished their hours but have no job prospects. If you’re in California and earning $1200 per month, that won’t cover your rent.
But if you want to continue your education at our Cal States, volunteer somewhere and reapply. Or can you apply for the Health Education major/undeclared?
