I did not know what I was going to do my first year in college. I took the wrong classes and ended up with a 2.9 (not major courses, just GEs). This semester is my second semester and I am likely to get C's in both of my core classes (bio). I'm planning to transfer two years from now to finish all of my requirements. Do you think I can do it? Should I switch my major to chem? Phys? I know I'm practically ruled out for medical school.. What should I do with my life? Be a nurse? I don't know what to do with my life.. I sound very pessimistic at the moment.. But I simply don't know where I'm headed. Miraculously getting all A's next semester doesn't seem so realistic either.. I'm really considering dropping out.

Saudade,
First off, the average college graduate ends up changing their majors 3 or 4 times before they find what they really want to major in. You are most certainly still in the running for medical school! DO NOT DROP OUT! That is the worst thing you could do!! Give it some time, continue taking general education requirements…they are needed for ANY major…start exploring your options…Do some research on different careers/majors. If medical school is something you really want to go for, technically you can major in anything you want as long as you have the preprofessional classes completed (Chemistry inorganic/organic, physics, calculus etc…) Most people applying to medical school major in the sciences (Biology or Chemistry) that way they have all of their courses covered. If getting straight A’s is not in the cards then shoot for the very best grade that you can get! I had a very rough start my first two years of college, lots of W’s on my transcripts, had NO CLUE what I wanted to do or even how the whole college experience worked…I have done a 180 and I am earning all A’s and B’s completing a bachelors in Biology minor in Chemistry and applying to med school next year. So it is possible! If you want something, go for it! You are going through a stage that EVERYONE goes through…don’t let it get the best of you. Stay in school, it will all work out in the end! =)

While I’m not saying the OP should drop out, I think that taking a hiatus from college can be a wise choice, particularly if a student is very unsure of what they want to pursue and are doing poorly in their classwork. College will always be there, many people take a break and return when they are ready to really apply themselves, myself included.

Changing majors is one thing, but your college record stays with you, so you don’t want to dig too deep a hole at a time when you are either not sure or not interested in what you’re doing.

The decision to stay in school or take time off is a highly personal and complex consideration, there is no universal answer.
