What To Expect When You Get To UCLA (Transfer Edition)

Because everyone lurks around threads that aren’t involving their school, yep! Chill out dude.

I got a question for @UC! I didn’t read anything about what you took to your dorm, let us know! (What you absolutely NEED) How are the roommates? Thanks!

Well I’m not lurking lmao, I’m trying to transfer to UCLA for Fall 2011, I haven’t gotten in yet but I’m tryin~

Uccasualty! is there a place to print 24 hours? I mean I don’t really want to bring my printer if it isn’t necessary… A list of necessities would be wonderful! Are we pushing our luck? How was breakfast this morning? Were you able to get pam cooking spray w/ your egg whites? lol

@ Lee if you end up being my roommate & making food in the room I’ll be happy to try your Korean creations!

are you serious that we can only eat at Hedrick? That is such a bummer. I hear that De Neve has the best food. :-/

I’m hoping to get my assignment in De Neve, any of the three… or Dykstra. But I’m leaning more to De Neve. It’s funny, when I decided I wanted to goto UCLA I spent an hour or so just looking at all the delicious foods the different places sold… even if I can’t eat all of it it sounds so good.

Shawna, I was like…“Wait…I thought she wasn’t living on campus…” It took me a while to get it, haha! I blame my lack of sleep! ;x Yeah! That would be cool, at least you would be open to accept it. I know some of my American friends automatically go “EW! O__O”

=/ Let’s hope for that! I know that housing assignments are being completed next week…so I will call AAP and see if they can let me knowwww…my roommate is doing the same, so hopefully they can arrange us together. We’ve been emailing John non-stop and all he says is “Wait and see…:)” LOL!!!

I’m glad I got DeNeve!

wait how do you know you have de neve! for summer? are all the people from TSP going to be housed together? I thought all summer peeps were placed in Rieber? De Neve would be cool!

ok Lee you are in the know about everything! What else do you know? lol I really want the book list so I can buy my books online! What about our schedules?! Do you know about that? & how are they arranging people for summer?

hahaha. i’m sorta crossing my fingers for an asian roommate who will help me figure out how to cook rice in a rice cooker. my mom wants to get one for me, but little does she know, i can’t make rice–it always turns out too hard or too soft…

I meant…I’m glad I got DeNeve during the school year. ^-^

…I’ll find out when I call them. I call them too much and it costs them more moolah, I’m feeling pretty bad about it, hahaha.

Okay, I’ll try my best to answer everyone’s questions…

Yes, I am in MIMG and I’m currently taking an upper div. biochem class (Chem 153A). I’ll also be taking the second biochem class in the series(153B) during session C. My professor did the math and we realized that during a regular quarter Chem 153A meets 4 hours per week for 10 weeks (40hr/qrtr). During the summer session we meet 5 hours per week for 6 weeks (30hr/qrtr). So, it’s pretty easy to see why things are moving along so quickly; we have to cover the same amount of material in less than the normal amount of in-class time.

When I moved onto campus I found that I had room for things I did not think I would have room for. I actually had to make a few trips during the week to go back and get things that help me relax and have a good time. For example, I brought my electric guitar, an amp, and guitar effects and they fit perfectly in the corner of my room. =)

Here’s a list of things you should consider bringing:

 1. GET A FRIDGE! (Dimensions should be no bigger than 30 x 24 x 48… I measured, haha) Trust me, I know walking to the dining halls isn’t far at all, but it ends up being annoying having to run back and forth just to grab a quick thing to snack on (and you don’t want to use your swipes on that). Especially since you’ll be doing plenty of running around for a million other things.
2. BRING AN EXTRA LONG ETHERNET CABLE! The wifi around Rieber is either non-existent or terribly unreliable if you can manage to find it. The rooms have a single ethernet jack in the wall so bringing an adapter for more than one cable would probably be a good idea as well. The internet connection here is good, though.
3. BRING QUARTERS and LIQUID LAUNDRY DETERGENT! Each floor in Reiber only has 1 washer and 1 dryer, which hasn’t been a problem so far since there is not that many people on each floor. The machine’s take quarters and you can’t swipe your bruin card for laundry. They are also front-loading and the washer is a tumbler type washer that uses liquid detergent. Also, bring a laundry hamper.
 4. BRING A FAN! It can get freakin’ hot and musty in these rooms so a fan will be your best friend. I have a small cylindrical one that rotates and fits on my desk. It does the job, but you could bring a bigger one if you wanted.
 5. BRING A SLEEPING MASK and EAR PLUGS! Random noise or a desk lamp from your roommates/floormates can drive you nuts and ruin your sleep… but I think you knew this already. Just do yourself a favor and get some protection.

I wouldn’t bring a printer/scanner (I didn’t). I haven’t used it or located it yet, mostly because I haven’t had to, but I’m positive Rieber has an entire printing, copying, and computer center on the ground floor. However, I don’t know if it is open 24 hrs. It probably is because the front desk is open 24hrs and everything else on the bottom floor seems to be open pretty late.

Lastly, BRING A GOOD ATTITUDE! All of you in TSP probably won’t experience what is the dullness of the typical UCLA student until the fall quarter, mainly because your probably going to be hanging around with people in your program, but I feel like a lot of people here just forgot that school can be FUN TOO! Anyways, if you guys ever need to borrow some laundry detergent, just want to relax and jam a sing-a-long, or get sick of dining in the mess halls and want a REAL omlette, don’t be afraid to stop by and say hello. You’ll be able to find me easily too… I’m the one where that tasty food smell is coming from, where the rock ‘n’ roll is turned up, and where the door is always open. =)

another good post! I’m down to hear your music. I’m afraid if I sing along though, no one will want to stop by.

^ Ditto for me… my singing sounds like a dying cat. I joke that with time… years and years of practice, I shall cease to sound like a dying cat… and instead sound like a molested walrus hehehe

Awesome! Thanks for the information! I’ll be sure to keep that in mind! Hahaha! We’ll all definitely head over to your room now!

Count me in for the jam sesh! ha ha ha.

Uccasualty! Thanks so much! Your posts are much appreciated! yay. A+++ for you!
