Since my freshman year of high school, I have taken a vast interest in business. However, I don't really now what I want to pursue within the business field. I have been suggested so many things from accounting to computational finance. At the same time, I have my dad telling me it is extrememly hard to excel within business field unless you have an Ivy league label. Could some of you verify my father's claim and also provide me with possible major/career advice (along with potential colleges for a business career)?

SAT:2120

Math II: 710
Chemistry:720

ACT: hoping to score 33 (taking in september)

It is not extremely hard to excel in business without an Ivy League label. That may be true for an extremely narrow range of businesses, but in general, it does not matter where you went to college.

I would recommend majoring in something substantive (not a traditional business major)1 as an undergraduate, then either working toward an MBA part time or working for a couple years, then going back to school full time. The skills that are taught in a business program - either graduate or undergraduate - make a lot more sense when you have a real-world to apply them within. I speak from some experience - I got a business bachelor’s without any business experience, then five years later started my MBA. There was no comparison, and it was not due to the fact that one was a master’s and one a bachelor’s.

With your math SAT, why not major in math? The skills you learn there - the math, but even more so the ability to think through and solve very hard problems - will serve you well in the business world. It would also set you up beautifully if you decide you want to concentrate in finance or economics in your MBA program.

Also, if you do decide to major in something like math, I’d strongly recommend taking some courses that help you understand people, especially how people interact with each other - psychology and/or sociology. One of the keys to success in business is the ability to work effectively with people of all types.
