what ucla wants

malishka31, what's your major?

You can not take ANY 60 units . For one they do require that you have certain english courses/ math courses/ b4 you transfer

I was trying to emphasize the fact that those 60 units aren't limited to IGETC courses.

dhl,

In my experience, the essay is not nearly as important as people suggest. Just a heads up.

Then what do you think is the next most important factor after the GPA?

btw, let's not even consider TAP and course completion because those may not apply to some people and vary among majors.

GPA and course completion based on available courses. The slickest essay in the world isn't going to do squat if you don't have any of your pre-reqs done.

as i said, ignore pre-req completion because its importance may vary among majors. The most impacted majors would put more weight on the completion of pre-reqs while the less impacted majors will likely to be more lenient on it.

If you take that factor out, it's obviously the essay that comes next in line.

Since when? Major prep has, as far as I've been told, been one of the most important factors for admission. The UCLA admissions website says so as well.

Other than GPA and major prep, completion of IGETC is a big factor. There's also completion of the UC English composition, mathematics, and additional subject requirements.

that's what i've been saying for the past 10 posts or so.

nope, but we'll find out the answer by tomorrow.

thnx for pointing out the obvious.

And if you dont have your essays done, pre-reqs or IGETC completion won't do you squat no matter how high your GPA is.

dhl3,

Actually...I have some anecdotal stories about that. I've met some people who wrote absolutely awful essays because they knew that with TAP and IGETC completion they had very little to worry about.

Remember, the essay helps you to explain your accomplishments. If your accomplishments are painfully clear, however, the essay becomes increasingly redundant.

What i mean by "not having essays done" is like writing two sentences for each essay and turning it in.

I doubt any applicants had any luck with that, unless he/she has special connection with the adcom or has donated a couple million or a building.

they do not read a lot of the essays.

for UCSD for example, when in TAG... they tell you upfront, we arent reading your essay ..

i believe this thread is solely for UCLA incase you haven't read the title yet?
And from what I know, UCLA definitely reads essays. ALL THREE OF THEM.

what is pre-major? history at ucla is pre-major and i'm not sure what it is.
also, how do i make it clear to ucla that i completed major requirements for the alternate major, but not for the first-choice major? if i am tap certified will they immediately check my alternate major?

also, the first essay question asks u to discuss ur major. what if u are applying for two different majors?

pre-major is a major that still requires you to take certain pre-reqs at UCLA before being submitted to the actual major itself.

You'll need to reapply to the major once you complete all the pre-reqs at UCLA.

"also, the first essay question asks u to discuss ur major. what if u are applying for two different majors?"

discuss your first-choice major.

i heard that each uc's will consider courses that are required for the same major at other uc's. does that mean they look at all courses that satisfies the major requirements for all uc's, or do they only consider the maj req. courses u completed for the uc's u applied to?

about the pre-major: does that mean that u don't HAVE to be in history major? can u choose some other major near history, ONCE u are in ucla?

if a major is popular (but, not impacted), does that mean it is hard to get into?
