already sent #1son to college----lots of socks and underwear b/c they don’t launder often; skip anything alse–his taste may change in a new environment and they dress WAY casual…

bigredmom - my thoughts exactly. S said he didn’t want any new clothes, but I’m buying him lots of socks and boxers and maybe a couple of pairs of jeans.

the birthday suit is the new tuxedo. go big or go home.

I’ll have a lot of jeans, mostly dark washed since they work for both everyday go-to-class attire as well as semi-formal wear for going for going out at night.

Hella t-shirts for going to class, a bunch of plaid button-downs to put over the t-shirts with the top two buttons unbuttoned as well as the last two so the t-shirt can show through a bit.

2 pairs of Khakis, Couple trendy-ish board-shorts, couple hats, 2 belts, 1 pair of sneakers, pumas, and dress shoes. Maybe I’ll buy a pair of those dress shoes everyones talking about.

Maybe like 2-3 polo shirts, Abercrombie, Ralph Lauren, Lacoste and the like.

Gray workouty jacket doubles up for going out at night, 1 nice leather jacket, and a couple of skater jackets.

Done deal. Not too undressed, not too over the top boarding school preppy.

wait till macy’s is having a sale, and pick up a few solid color ralph lauren polos. lacoste and brooks brothers work too, but the pony is my favorite and a classic choice. especially considering college guys suck at laundry, and ralph lauren doesnt morph shape after every wash like lacoste does.

For pants, jeans are going to be most important. Have a couple of nice going out pairs from express or gap. dark wash is considered dressier, but light wash has been popular/fratty lately too. To fill out the jeans wardrobe, im a big fan of levis 505 regular fit. They’re only $30, and they’re great casual jeans. For shorts I like khaki, ~1 inch above the knee. For shoes, some sperrys will work really well. I like reefs as well. For t-shirts, college shirts or student organization shirts will be needed, and a few reliable tees from gap. None of that hollister or american eagle stuff, let that die along with your high school career.

For winter, north face fleeces are very popular. Columbia’s good too, and its more affordable.

^Speaking of sales, Nordstrom’s is having their annual anniversary sale right now if anyone needs to do some shopping–free shipping (if you buy online…I have to since there’s no nordstrom here in NYC :() if you spend over $200.
It ends Monday.

Just spreading the word.

Go to Plato’s Closet, or any thrift shop like Goodwill and you’ll find all sorts of awesome clothes for a really nice price.

Get a mix, causal clothes to chill in, and dressy clothes for big things like interviews, presentations, etc.

Why do people keep saying cardigans are dressy? I see girls wearing them constantly around campus, they’re like a basic staple in the fall and winter - I mean basic cardigans like this. It’s something casual i see people typically wearing with jeans and stuff. I’m not talking about the matchy sweater-sets middle aged women frequently wear.

^Good question. I never understood that either.

I guess their and our definition of formal, greatly differ.

Dont listen to these people. What you really need to do is suit up because tonight is going to be legend–DARY.

Here’s what you need:

Get some muscle tshirts/polos. Then work out a *load so that you’re just extremely buff. I suggest the use of steroids since hte fall is coming up pretty quickly. Then get a spray tan unless you tan easily. Still, a spray tan is usually cooler. When you wear your polos, ALWAYS pop your collar. Get some nice shades too. The bigger the better. Then you need to get a new *in haircut. Either get a fade or a blowout.

This is how I wear my cardigans

I have not read all of the posts, so I hope I am not repeating anything. But my friend’s son went to U. of Penn from California. He called home and said he needed some polo shirts. In California most kids just wear t-****s the vast majority of the time to school and might wear a button down to go out at night. So, if you or your kid is going to school in California, the dress is very casual.

hey-I prefer a nice black t-shirt

I wear a lot of button downs

Polo, Vineyard Vines, Brooks Brothers, etc…

dude in the uppermost right picture died in a car crash

Son just left for a sporting event, as an observer not participant: wearing tuxedo shirt, bow tie, vest, black pants, straw hat that has a black grosgrain ribbon, these boots from Crew.
and a pocket watch from GentleMen’s Emporium
He was quite dapper. I talked him out of the top hat.
