What would be a competitive SAT score for Dartmouth?

^I agree.

It all just gives them a broader picture. High SAT scores might indicate that you are naturally smart. High SATs and low GPA might say to them that you are smart but lazy. High SATs, low GPA, and great teacher recs will let them know that you are hard-working (or not) and that your low GPA is because your teachers are tough graders. Finally, the subject test scores will quantify the rigor of your school's academic programs to put an A or a B into perspective. No one thing will make or break you, just make sure that you do well on most criteria.

Thanks ! :)

My daughter's been getting mail from Dartmouth, yet I don't think she has a chance - soph PSAT 66 CR & W, 53 M, ACT 29 composite, 3.9 unweighted GPA. Do many colleges send mail based on PSATs to kids for whom the school is a real reach?

^Yes, they do. I get stuff from HYP, etc. all the time. I'm sorry, but you're daughter doesn't seem in range for Dartmouth. Even though her ACT is better than her her PSATs, it's still the 25th percentile. Does she have an amazing hook? Recruited athlete? URM? etc?

Your daughter is likely to improve an awful lot between PSAT sophomore Fall and SAT junior Spring/ senior Fall. On a current scale equivalent, I went from a 1110 PSAT in 10th grade to a 1480 SAT junior Spring. Now I now how schools' acceptances rates have dropped so much, if they are sending out so much solicitating propaganda. Back in the day, I received very few brochures from any top 50 schools; even after getting a 1480 SAT.

Are these superscored, or the real scores?

Yeah... don't worry about it. I increased about 400 points from my sophomore year PSATs to the actual SATs. Plus, I studied a good amount for the sophomore year ones.

gellino - I hadn't thought of that, but when the schools buy the list of PSAT scores above a certain level, they must be factoring in projected improvement.

colinization - no, she doesn't have a really outstanding hook. She's thinking of majoring in Arabic and will be starting with two years of college Arabic, and 5 years of hs Spanish, but on the other hand, her lousy math scores will hurt; I think her CR, W, and Science will go up but she probably won't get above about a 25 (or mid 500s) on Math. Oh well, she might not apply to any Ivies anyway because she "can't stand" cold weather. Never would have guessed climate would be such a big deal.

if you take more than 2 sat subject tests, are all of them taken into account or just your highest 2? if your 3rd score is low will it hurt you?

does dartmouth consider the sat writing section for admission? please say yes lol

^They do, unfortunately. But califa, there are plenty of good schools with nice weather- Duke, Wake Forest, Washington and Lee, UVA, UNC, William & Mary, Emory, Rice, Vanderbilt, etc.

Will a 2390 help make up for a 3.89 UW GPA?

i would assume so. congrats on that great score!

Thanks... I've always heard that the GPA was the most important factor in the college admissions process so I was disappointed to say the least when I found out I didn't have a 4.0.

If anyone is still wondering, the lowest scorer I know who got into Dartmouth got a 2080. I don't know the breakdown, but I guess that's still pretty low for an acceptance into Ivies.

But then again, he applied ED and had AMAZING piano accomplishments on the national level. :P

well, a 2080 is a 693.33 per category, which is above the 25th percentile for each category. For someone with such a legit hook, that's understandable.

So, my friend whose family has given a building (seriously) to Dartmouth got a 2080 also. Does this mean he's in?

I think that if you break 1500 on the SAT that you are very competitive for Dartmouth.

what would be a competitive SAT score range for an international student?

i know someone who got in with a 1980. DOnt get ur hopes up from that but honestly.. I know dartmouth is the ivy that cares least about SATs so if u think u have a shot --- apply.

^They care less than Brown?

^Dartmouth and Brown have very similar SAT averages. (Dartmouth: 1440, Brown: 1430)
Brown has changed a lot in the past five years.
Five years ago, Brown had an SAT average of 1395. It was still seen as highly selective and very desirable but Brown used to accept more quirky applicants. The people I know at Brown from my school are actually pretty conservative politically. I'm the 'flaming liberal' who is attending the Southern university.
