All the colleges Iam applying to are Dream level lol , couldn’t really find match schools providing good finaid and good rank of CS.
These are coleges I will be applying to- MIT, Harvard , Princeton , Oxford , CMU , Columbia , Cornell , UWaterloo , McGill .
If Im still doing a mistake please specify , I think Uwaterloo will provide some funds through Co-op , Im still Unsure about CMU
I will be also applying to a few Regional colleges
Well I realized North American univeristies either charge too high or are too competitive.(Its a hard knock life)
@Soheils What do u think about this list
That’s strange, because the FAQ says:
http://scholarships.ua.edu/faq/#eligibility
International students are evaluated the same as out-of-state students as long as the student has an ACT/SAT score and meets all requirements by the deadline.
And under “Types of Scholarships” they only list in state and out of state, no international.
http://scholarships.ua.edu/types/
Pretty crappy if despite that they’re not automatic.
I’m believe mom2 can clarify this. But I do believe the merit awards that are automatic at UA include international students.
@Aaryaman123 since you are applying to reaches, you may benefit from applying to more schools, especially since you have a lot of time. This is my opinion though.
Look at universities outside of the NorthEast as well.
Please stop using QS as a measure of program strength. Your list is compiled from the QS ranking.
@bodangles the OP should call them. That is the easiest solution.
@thumper1 Yes, UA scholarships are also available for international students. I got full tuition
Can you work in coops as an international student with a student visa? I thought you could only be employed by the university in limited capacity?
@paul2752 Thats great although I would still confirm by contacting them and I also dont know my cumulative GPA.
@mommdc lol , well I will confirm whether I can handle the tuition of Uwaterloo and Mcgill or not.
@Soheils That is true I should apply to a safety school also but I really need financial aid and job security .
I really need to confirm that I do get a job from Universities like Albama (on internet the only measure is QS) , so I really need to search a bit more for this because Permanent Residence is important I need to settle in US or Canada.
@Aaryaman123
What I meant was that you should apply to more full need top colleges too. Since all you can apply to are reaches, more won’t hurt.
How are going to do Co-op as a non citizen? I think Canada ties working hours to GPA, so you can’t work during your first year. Even with a high GPA, I doubt that you can work your way through.
More importantly, how are you going to afford British colleges?
@Soheils I misunderstood the need blind admission for Oxford , its off the list now
Can I do Co-op from second year ?
Thats true I should apply to more full need top college so should I add more from QS and see whether they provide finaid OR just check from another site
US visas limit where and how much you can work, such that, you would not be able to pay your way through school. Even US citizens know how unrealistic that is.
Additionally, you cannot presume that you will stay in the US after graduation.
The US government expects that you will return to your country after you graduate. You would be a guest student in the US for your education only.
Immigration rules and laws have become strict. US employers have to state, to the US government, that there are no available US citizens to fill a position, before the employers can consider a non-citizen. Employers have to be willing to go through a mountain of paperwork and be willing to pay fees to sponsor a non citizen. It’s easier just to hire a US citizen.
Given the fact that there are thousands of US students now majoring in CS, you would not be a priority candidate for employment. Additionally, a large number of companies require US security clearances and, as a non-citizen, you would not qualify for employment.
If you are not granted a scholarship, how could you pay for an expensive US education?
Definately @auntbea considering these points I’m not applying to normal Universities there Im just applying to top colleges in US for CS like MIT which do provide good amount of financial need aid or scholarship
Just trying my luck if I get into one of these.
@Aaryaman123 why aren’t you considering Caltech, Stanford and other top non northeastern colleges?
I will consider Caltech and Stanford , Infact Stanford was one of my top preference with MIT but a few days back I saw that it provides no financial aid to International students , but ofcourse if I get admitted in any of these it would be worth a shot to take loans or spend money I guess.
Hundreds of thousands of students apply to the “top colleges”. These schools educate, primarily, domestic students. Competition for these schools is fierce. You cannot assume it is easy. You also cannot assume that you will be funded.
@auntbea Dont worry I am completely aware of the fact , Im ready for the heatbreak but trying just in case I get admitted .
@Aaryaman123 Stanford does give aid to int’ls. You are confusing “need blindness”, which is an admission policy, with meeting full need. Look at this webpage; though do not trust it fully without research :
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Need-blind_admission
Lol yeah @Soheils thanks
From the Stanford website…LIMITED aid for internationals
@thumper1 @Aaryaman123 Stanford gives 150 students an average of $53,422 a year.
http://www.usnews.com/education/best-colleges/the-short-list-college/articles/2015/09/24/10-universities-that-offer-international-students-the-most-aid
This means that they accept an average of 32 needy int’l students per year; therefore, while it is competitive, the possibility of receiving aid exists.
In other words, it seems to be limited in the number of recipients, not amount.
I know Stanford won’t be disapointing in providing aid , the main problem is to get accepted in these school
