Hi,

Prompt:

"Technology promises to make our lives easier, freeing up time for leisure pursuits. But the rapid pace of technological innovation and the split second processing capabilities of computers that can work virtually nonstop have made all of us feel rushed. We have adopted the relentless pace of the very machines that were supposed to simplify our lives, with the result that, whether at work or play, people do not feel like their lives have changed for the better."

Assignment: "Do changes that make our lives easier not necessarily make them better?"

Essay:

"Technology is crucial to modern life, as without technological advances, we would spend a great deal more time and money on otherwise straightforward activities. Several examples from history demonstrate this.

Without technology, we would waste a tremendous amount of time travelling. For example, aeroplanes have only been around for approximately a century, and yet we have already benefited from them more than their creators could have dreamed. When world leaders from such far-away countries as America and Saudi Arabia convened in London at the G20 summit, they were able to travel there in a matter of hours, thanks to planes. Without air travel, they would have wasted days, if not weeks, travelling by ships, cars or trains, during which the world economy probably would have devolved to an even worse state. However, technological advances made it possible for them to save precious time and money.

The Internet, allowing us to find information in a matter of minutes, must have facilitated countless research projects and experiments. Before its creation, in order to learn something scientific, one had to buy a book, or (very rarely) phone, or send a letter to, the person who had come up with the idea in the first place. Nowadays, in 5 minutes, we can find countless reams of information on topics that are sometimes very advanced and arcane, all while sitting at our computer. In the past, we would have had to hunt through the nearest library, and possibly buy a book on the subject if it were unavailable at the former. Valuable manpower, time, and money must have been wasted as researchers sought to find information - most of which, today, the Internet allows us to access in a matter of minutes.

Advances in medicine have allowed old people to live much longer than they would have otherwise; among the countless other benefits of this is the fact that we can now get eyewitness accounts of such moments in history as D-Day, the sinking of the Titanic, and even WWI's end. Even fifty years ago, this would not have been possible, but today, we need not spend hours researching what happened on the Titanic, say, when we can ask a person who was actually there.

In short, technology is an indispensible part of modern life, due to it helping us save countless hours and pounds. We are progressing faster than ever before, because researchers can use the Internet, leaders can meet to solve global disasters in days, and we can get eyewitneses accounts of important moments from history. We cannot live without technology - at least, not life as we know it."

^What score do you think I would receive? Thanks ^^.
