Whats Campus Like?

Hey I am from Florida and I was admitted. I plan to visit in Late March. Aside from looking at pics through the OSU website and webshots.com I know very lil of OSU besides they are very good academically (#54 overall, #19 Public, #15 BSchool :D). By the Way: anyone know of websites that ppl post pictures of campus visits?

-Whats the campus like: Historic ivy covered building like, just a ton of cement block building etc…???

 • as an OOS i dont know a living soul at OSU :P. what are ppl like? close minded and closed groups or very open and friendly?
 • im not really worried about Columbus cause its a big city but wat about the near vicinity of OSU campus? any good? i believe its right of High street but plz tell me wat its like and any suggestions about places to visit… XD

AS you can see im really excited but I know little of OSU Campus and Student life so plz I challenge all you Saavy CC’ers to enlighten me :D!!

acarta07, I'm very much in the same shoes as you are. I'm even visiting in late March!

im not really an expert but ive been on campus a lot (though i havent been able to see all of it). from what i saw, i realllly liked it a lot, i mean reading the statistics online, you might feel it too be an overwhelmingly large campus, and might even feel intimidated. However, i think that its benefits far outweigh it though. Its got a lot of very nice facilities, new buildings/technology, and they recently built a new swimming pool which is one of the best i have seen, and also a new recreation center (RPAC) which is HUGE and very much state of the art.

Im sure you'll find all kinds of people there, some that you like, some that you dont, but im sure that you'll meet a lot of new friends, and being all freshmen and in a new environment, very open to new ideas and new people. I dont think that you'll need to be worried about not having enough to do on campus cause its huge, and definitely a lot of places to go.

I live in ohio and i plan on going there probably next year, it seems like a nice place despite all the heavy partying and drinking that they do there, but i plan on partying too so its not necessarily a bad thing. im sure that whatever your looking for, you'll find it at OSU.

I definitely didnt cover all that OSU offers, so a visit is probably the best thing to do here!

Thnx Swim... Brit u OOS as well? where from? im goin for the March 27th tour so i guess i see you there.

Any other comments ppl?

I'm from Alabama. I'm actually going the 29th & 30th or March. How long are you staying?

Well probably a few days or so cause im going to see Purdue, Michigan State and mayby Indiana after that.

Im probably gonna pick OSU over those though, however im waiting on University of Miami.

i live in ohio, but not near columbus, so i've only visited campus a few times to see bits and pieces. i was there a few weeks ago and did a tour of the residence halls and such... it's pretty nice!
i was pleasantly surprised... especially since before applying, OSU was not one of my top choices, but now it's moved up the list significantly.

the students that assisted with my tours and those that answered questions were really friendly. i have many friends at OSU right now that really enjoy it... with that many people on a campus, i'm sure you're not going to get along with everyone, but from what i hear, it's not difficult to find your niche, either... the students giving tours talked about how it's all about how open you are the first few days =)

i'm not feeling the whole historic ivy-covered building vibe. but not everything is cement-block either. it's probably in the middle somewhere... i'll see if i can find pictures. like swim said, lots of new facilities. those are nice. heck yeah. the RPAC is sweeeeet.

as for the area around OSU... lots of places to eat is what i noticed haha. a lot of people get apartments and such after freshman year, and life is managable, from what i hear. buck IDs are the way of life for many... you can use those for bus fare to columbus if you want to travel into the city.

i know my responses are relatively general... but i did really like it! make good use of your visit there... the people i met were very helpful so hopefully it'll be the same for you.

I guess it is similar to campuses like penn state and UF? So, you won't find that gallant, ivy covered atmosphere, mostly buildings that get the job done without too many frills/columns.

Is the campus nice though or the architecture is really boring and dull? Lol OSU describes the campus as gorgeous with the Imperial looking Oval, the University Hall etc....

Also wats Mack Hall like? Im really thinking of going to Mack Hall, any suggestions or comments about it?
How quick does it fill up if anyone knows?

every school will describe its campus as magnificent. Just look at the pictures and you will get the idea. The campus is typical of large state schools, with a couple of beautiful features but mostly composed of regular brick/concrete buildings. So, it doesn't have that "intelectual" air as you walk around, but it has a lake, trees, and snow.

Here's the Housing site's info about Mack Hall. If you select a room, you can get the general idea of room layouts, too.

Mack Hall came up on another recent thread--see post #10: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=285463

One of my friends lives in Mack Hall. He is over here pretty much every night because it's so crazy over there. Could just be his floor, could just be this year, but I would not recommend it!

Campus does have a few ivy-covered buildings (literally), but mostly it is just a mixture of lots of different architectures. The actual architecture building is pretty sweet, though, make sure to check that out when you come visit.

The people you meet on campus depends on what you do. If you stay in your dorm and never leave except for classes, then you will only know the people in your dorm, and you might get unlucky and have an antisocial floor. However, if you get out there and Get Involved!(this slogan was repeated so many times during my orientation week), I guarantee you that you will find many open, accepting, comfortable groups of people. You can take it up with me if you join extracurriculars and never make any friends, but don't worry, that won't be an issue!

Since we are the largest school in the nation, we also have more of everything. There are a lot of people who party on the weekends and get rowdy, but if that's not your scene, it's so easy to stay away from. The worst experience I've had is just knowing my friends are doing it and feeling sad for them, but I've never been in a position that made me uncomfortable. When will I put those "How to Say No to Drugs" lessons into use?

Unfortunately, in my opinion, the surrounding city sucks. There is an area called the Short North (aka gay district to some people) which is really artsy and has nice restaurants, including a store called the Global Gallery - visit there if you need to buy any presents (it's on High Street, closer to the lower-numbered streets). Otherwise, the High Street directly across from campus is not safe for girls to be out in at night. OSU tries really hard, they do, to make it a better environment - now we have the "South Campus Gateway" (which is apparently "restaurants and entertainment" - just basically like a little outside mall over on High & 11th) which is at least well-lit, and places like Urban Outfitters and more bookstores have moved in. However, we still have the bars and "smoke shops" and scary people walking around over there. I never feel threatened on campus - in fact, I feel safe just walking across to the campus side of High Street, because for some reason homeless people are never on campus. I don't know how they do that, but I have never been harrassed or threatened on campus. It is like magic.

Most people try to look for a "good fit" when they are choosing their college, but in my opinion, since OSU is so huge, it's a good fit for everyone : )

Thnx a lot... Im looking for a traditional college looking dorm with some history. any reccommendations? also why would anyone pick dorms in north side. they look sort of bad from the website (at least in looks) correct me if im wrong.

Well, for one thing, they're air-conditioned...which can make a for a more comfortable living space during that mid-to-late spring period (it can get pretty warm in OH during that time). Also, while many of the rooms in North Campus are quads (two-room suites), each quad has it's own bathroom, so it gives students a least a little more privacy. Also, from what I've heard, as a general rule, North campus seems to be relatively quieter and more laid back--of course that's assuming that a student is looking for calmer surroundings.

parties frequent here?thats a must

Anyone know how hard it is to get into a frat at OSU? do you have to be a super jock to make it in or what?
