For transfer students, what's the financial aid like at SU? I looked on their FA website and seems like its just scholarships and need-based aid...do they give out good aid or just so-so aid?

I’m a transfer student this year, and I received a really solid financial aid package. They really try to work with you. Your initial estimated financial aid package is usually just that… an estimate. They worked with me a couple of weeks until everything was good for my family and I. You just have you show your potential. I guess it really depends on the student. Good luck!

Does the financial aid cover living costs? I live in California and I want to transfer to Syracuse on my junior year… How do i show my potential? :(

d just accepted, via ED but not her first choice, so it’s more like RD - which is great. can you share your financial aid experience and more details, if possible. thanks

Whats the aid like for middle income students?

As a freshman going into my second semester at SU, I would say that the financial aid is so-so. I am from a middle income, single parent, single child home, and i got around 9,000$ in financial aid. Honestly, that’s what most of my friends recieved, or less. I only know one person who received almost a full ride. She graduated number 2 in her entire school, not just class.

Of my 9,000, only 4,000 is a grant, its for academic excellence, and this is the only one I don’t have to pay back (because its a grant). My other financial aid is subsdized or unsubsidized loan.

Depending on your financial situation and academics really depends on what SU gives you. Also…while you cannot get an ‘athletic’ scholarship, if you do play a sport and SU wants you to play for them, the coaches work some magic to get you some financial aid.

I hope this helps :)

you know i think anybody whose income is over $100K is on their own. working parents, single parent with a good job, etc. Even coming from Cali

“Whats the aid like for middle income students?”

Great question namesake92. I wish I saw it earlier when it was posted. Just refer to the link below:

[Phanstiel Grant](Campaign News | Forever Orange)

what if you have an efc of $0?

House of London: Thanks for sharing that link! That is so exciting that there are funds available specifically for mid income students! I haven’t seen a single school with a program like that yet.

I’m a second-semester SU/Newhouse freshman.

If you have a substantial need (like a zero EFC), SU will do what it can. However, even if they cover the entire tuition, or you have enough additional programs to cover tuition, there’s a good chance they’ll leave the ~$3500 room and board charge intact, and you’ll still have a substantial amount of loans to contend with.

I’m afraid I wouldn’t be of much help evaluating SU’s aid for middle-income students, though the Phanstiel grant is a good sign.

My daughter is a freshman at SU, and for us, we had an EFC = 0 and her total financial aid package was $46,519.00 for the year of which only $5,000 was in loans. She received an SU grant of $24,000 alone. We were over the moon with her package and are crossing our fingers that it’s near the same for her Sophmore year. Good Luck!

im a freshman at cuse now. i had an EFC of 21,000 last year, but I got a total aid package (scholarships & finaid) of $31,000. My EFC may seem high but the school was unaffordable without all that aid. As it is, im taking a loan out for the remaining percentage and will come out of SU with nearly $80,000 in debt, however, i highly recommend SU.

During the first week, they make sure you have every opportunity to make friends. TAKE ADVANTAGE of this week! You will love SU, especially if you like sports!

In addition, weather is NOT as bad as described. the beginning of the year is beautiful, then, if you like snow, it snows a lot. I like snow, so fine for me. but: if you don’t LOVE snow, don’t come here because you WILL hate it.

Enjoy & Good luck with all.
