What's Gregory like?

I noticed there hasn’t been much talk about Gregory, so I was wondering if anyone could fill me in on what it’s like to live there. I think its like 50% freshman, so that’s good. How does it compare to Quad and Hill?

Whats the social environment like?

give me anything you got on gregory

no comparision. quad is where the action is for freshman.

I thought Gregory was for Modern Language Program...?

One of the houses, but not the other.

I currently live in Gregory College House - Sophomore in the College.

The Modern Language program is housed in one of the two Gregory buildings. it offers French, Spanish, German, Italian and Russian....

The house if 50% freshman and the other 50% is made of various class levels - however, we have 250 or so residents so our freshman community would not resemble the Quad or Hill but we definitely compensate by the great interaction with upper classmen and the amazing tight knit community we have...

let me know if you guys have any other questions

Hey, finishing up freshman year in Gregory, I love it
Definitely great community and interaction between GA's, upperclassmen and underclassmen, which I think is one of the best things.
So we're small...makes it better...
I'm assistant events manager for next year, so I promise it's gonna be ridiculously good! :-)

I will be returning to Gregory next year for my third year. The reason that I return year after year has to do with the people. Gregory has events almost nightly when you can socialize with your housemates and staff. It's such a tight community and the people here have become my family away from home.

Hello all,

My name is Justin and I'm a sophomore at UPenn. I've lived in Gregory for the past two years and will also be living there again next school year.

Although not as well known as the Quad, Gregory is just as much fun and probably more tight-knit. About 50% of residents are freshmen. Everyone else is either a sophomore, junior, or senior (with progressively less of each).

This arrangement works well because the older students can mentor the younger ones and give them advice on class, professors, activities, etc. At the same time, freshmen can bond with their class.

One of the best things about Gregory is that everyone has their own room and bathrooms are shared among 2 or 4 people. Most freshmen live in quads, which presents the joys of having a roommate (becoming close to someone, meeting people through them), while also allowing for privacy. And you have three roommates so you're bound to like at least one of them.

There is always stuff going on at Gregory, be it with one of the five modern language programs or the film culture program. You can be assured that every night of the week there's a dinner, tea, or movie showing.

Greogory is conveniently located, within at least two blocks of 1920 commons, a grocery store, a movie theater, two coffee shop, pizza joint, frathouses, a post-office, and the gym.

This is just an overview, but I'll try to answer specific questions as they arise.

I live in Gregory for this year and will be hear next year as well, but I do not live in the Modern Languages Program building. That said, I've participated in the French program of the Modern Languages Program and it was really fun.

50% freshman and 50% upperclass like Dinkroe said. IMO, it actually helps because that way, any questions you have, from classes to financial aid, certain majors, etc. can get answered. Also, we're a tight knit community in a good way, i.e. sunday brunches (FREE FOOD!! and usually better than the dining halls!), fun games of soccer on Sundays (even in the snow sometimes), lots of movies playing for the different language programs and for the film culture program, ping pong and pool tournaments, and more.

Oh, and the rooms are nice, where each person in a suite has their own bedroom, and each suite (quad, double, or single) has one bathroom for its occupants to use. All in all, it's a pretty good place to be. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask us.

As a current--and future--Gregorian, I urge you all to consider Gregory as an alternative to the Quad, especially if you're concerned about noise and privacy issues. Sharing a room with someone can be fun, but I think Gregory achieves a better balance of proximity and privacy than is possible in the Quad. The staff here are also much more visible and accessible than in other houses (with the possible exception of Stouffer). None of my friends who live in the Quad have even met their house dean, while I've had a terrific time chatting with mine at dozens of house events throughout the year; this is possible mainly by virtue of the relatively small number of residents who live here. Gregory has also proven to be an excellent forum for getting to know upperclassmen, who not only have more experience with all things Penn but are just really cool people in general. I could go on, but I won't :P I will, however, be happy to answer any and all questions that any of you has.

Best,

u convinced me.. i applied at the MLP as well, is it gonna give me more chances to get in? I would LOVE to be part of the Maison Francaise, but since I'm 100% Italian, 1st language Italian, it would be nice to hear people talking in my own language as well.. :)

anyways thank u guys u gave really good info... so much more helpful than all those pictures.. :)

Makes me wonder if Gregory College House is engaging in blitz marketing... since we have two brand-new members who signed up just to tell us how great Gregory is!

lotti87 - You shouldn't have any problems getting accepted to the MLP, and you can go to events for as many of the languages as you like.

Former Gregorian and not part of the blitz marketing!

I'm applying to gregory as my 1st choice, if you don't apply for a residential program, are you randomly put into one of the 2 houses? I kind of want to be in the van pelt manor more than 1925 but i don't have a preference for the residential programs. Should i apply for the film culture program just to get a room in van pelt?

students in the Modern Languages Program make up the entirety of the Class of 1925 building, so if you don't apply to a language, that gives you a 100% chance of living in Van Pelt :-)

Gregory is full of mice. it doesn't have air conditioning.

ALL dorms (actually, all West Philly buildings) are full of mice and cockroaches, and several Gregory rooms do have air conditioning (upperclass only, so apply now and get priority!).

if i apply to film culture program will i be roomed with other people in the program? i am going to be a freshmen and i would like to be roomed or be on the floor with other freshmen?

As part of the film culture program, you'll be on the floor with other Gregory freshmen, and only about a third of them (I think) are actually in the program - I'm not sure if you'll be rooming with other film culture freshmen, but you'll definitely be rooming with other freshmen in a freshman hall (probably the 4th floor), that's for sure.

The 4th and 3rd floors are generally all freshman.
