I'm dying!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i found i just couldn't do anything until March 17th....
anyone plz help me >.< even if you think i will be rejected for sure, pz tell me so i can get ready for that...thx...

I think you have a good shot at MIT from the information you've given. Especially the mathematical research you're doing. Studying topology own your own is impressive as well.

thanks a lot cbf88 (Wow you r fast :P) feel a bit better now

by the way, i forgot 2 mention that i worked as an assistant teacher in my high school, teaching Gr 12 Geometry and Discrete Mathematics while i was in Gr 11 and i tutor some undergraduates in University of Toronto after school (Calculus and Physics)

hehe...also, there was a couple interesting stuff i put in the application:
i designed the route and travelled around Canada alone when i first arrived here
volunteered (and eat and stayed) in a homeless shelter in a very small town in Canada for two weeks

HAHA CONAN!!!!

you finally posted here !

i bet u r a SHOOO IN =)! =)

good luck MAN!

i really hope u can get into MIT, though i know u would have just as much fun(if not more) at u of tornto =)

yup i think the self study shows your intelligence. you have a good shot.

Come on people, this is an international student from China trying to get into MIT. The chances are low even if you had perfect stats. You have the best chance that you can have, but it's still relatively low because you are an international applicant from China.

hehe....Sandy...i wonder if you ever leave this site or not>.<
i guess i'll have more fun in U of T tho...since the math faculty will let me take 2nd & 3rd yr math directly :P (hehe, my professor just told me definatelt not 2 take 1styr math-_-), also, in U of T i don hv to take eight social sciences >.<

well, but you know...MIT is still MIT...-_-

atomicfusion:
the thing is...actually i count as Canadian high school student,
and all my grades, recs, transcripts are canadian ones,
donno if that helps...or they only count citizenship?

You don't count as a Canadian unless you have permanent resident status there. Otherwise, you are counted as Chinese. It sucks but it happens here all the time where kids go to American schools for years and still are thrown into the international pool and left to drown in college admissions.

You have a chance, but don't get your hopes up because you're most likely a Chinese international.

ic, thanks>.<
but how can they ever compare those chinese ppl in the US to those in China?
i mean...all the stats are in different scale, and the system is sooo different
i thought the chinese admission rate is low because a lot of them fake recs and wrote the GPA by themselves>.< (all my friends in china do that)

Oh, by the way, i just got my AMC mark...i donno if i should fax a note to them or not (since i left the AMC 2007 mark blank on my application)

Impressive for only 2 years in the Country. Who knows though, the Asian competition is brutal.

IMpressive, you beat me out by a million miles. I think you have a really, really good chance..
Good luck!

hehe, thx a loooot....
you guys reli made me feel better...well, i know i should just wait tho
(by the way, Inaina you r also reli gooood:P i read your post too!^^)

Ummmm anyone knows what should i do with my AMC?

conan - depends how you did on your amc

the 4 in ap calc may hurt you... though that is the only weak point in your application(aside from being international, of course)... its just that MIT is INSANELY competitive

Ummmm i got 130.5 in AMC
(well...i'm not really good at mutiple choice....expecting higher mark on AIME tho)
well....Calc was self studied...i asked MIT before about the APs and they told me thatit won't ever hurt you...well maybe ther were just saying that

wow I really really hope you get in! The things you did independently will demonstrate your initiative and impress the admissions people, I should think. Plus you're good in math and science, which is what MIT is all about.

SAT I or ACT scores?

I agree that the asian competition is fierce, though...

hehe, i tried my best 2 make the EC look interesting and non-asian. However, i'm really not sure how much does the "asian" really mean in admission.

hehe, by the way, i really don think i'm a tipical asian kid tho...(although it shows up on the application that i am>.<)

My honest assessment:

The 4 in Calc BC will definitely hurt. What are your SAT scores? You really haven't given us much information to evaluate you.

Also, by the way you type here, I honestly doubt that your essays were even convincing enough for MIT to land you an admit...and believe me...the essay matters a lot to MIT.

Compared to a lot of Canadian applicants I know, you really don't have the awards or leadership (though I'm not sure MIT cares about that...) to make you stand out from the crowd. I can't honestly say I know how you compare to the Chinese pool either.

Shuyun Wu...try again...

if u dont get in, i lose faith in the entire admissions process forevermore
