I need to ship a book to someone there and the address he provided seems incomplete:

ROOM #, *** **** RESIDENCE HALL
GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY, 37
WASHINGTON, DC 20057-0001

and I have no idea what that 37 is. Is this some kind of non-standard address?

Well, why should anyone have to guess what that 37 is. That is why I am asking, is this a proper format? What would be a proper format? If I send something with an original address and that 37, is not it going to get lost?

You don’t need the 37. The zip code there is also incorrect. The package will get there if you ship to:
Joe Hoya
Dorm ###
Georgetown Univeristy
Washington, DC 20057.

Technically, if you use zip + 4, the last 4 digits should be the person’s mailbox number (and I doubt that your friend is mailbox #1). GU mailboxes take the form 57####. Anyway, packages don’t actually go to your mailbox, they go to RHO (long story), so the gist is, if you have name, name of dorm, and Georgetown University, i will get there.

^This is so strange. I entered the information in USPS shipping assistant without the 37 or the last part of Zip Code. When the USPS verified the address, however, it automatically added 0001 at the end of the zip code. Maybe its some separate place or box where all mail should go? Anyways, I have never seen anything like this before.

So I entered:
Name
Residence Hall Name, Room #
Georgetown University
Washington, DC 20057 -0001

Hopefully it will work.
