What's the J-School at NYU like?

How are the professors?
I know alot of people think of NYU as a name brand school, but doesn it give you a boost particularly in the world of Journalism and mass communications? Thanks!

the j-school here is very, very competitive. the intro level classes are intentionally made very difficult because they want to weed people out.

you’re also required to double major as a journalism student.

for communications, NYU definitely does help you make connections. NYU is a recognizable name. many media companies recruit at NYU, and NYU students can get placed in amazing media internships. it really does help.

are you currenly in the school. How are the professors and why can’t you apply directly to the school? Is there a reason that they make you apply through CAS?

because undergrads go through CAS. that’s just how it is.

i’m in media in Steinhardt. i’ve only heard about the journalism program through people who ended up having to ditch the major because they couldn’t handle the competition.

My mom’s a journalist, and she was looking at the list of journalism faculty at NYU (cause I might do journalism as a second major). She seemed quite…starstruck. From that and that alone, I got the impression that NYU journalism is a pretty big deal.

By no means is it known as one of the best journalist schools in the country (Mizzou= world’s first j-school, Northwestern, Indiana, Syracuse, Maryland, etc.) but it is still a solid school in a great location.

My plan was originally to go into CAS for double major in Journalism & Cinema Studies, but i didnt make it and got put into LSP.

So… in two years after I finish LSP and go into CAS, what happens then? Do i go into the J School and work on my majors…? or is there a possibility I won’t get in? Sort of confused…

^ I know people doing LSP and Journalism…LSP students can start taking CAS classes right away freshmen year, you don’t have to wait 2 years. You’ll have 2 electives freshmen year, although I reccommend you get your requirements out of the way (1 global culture class, 1 science) so you’ll only have 2 required classes soph year, giving you 8 electives Soph year which you can use for Journalism and Cinema Studies classes.

[Journalism at NYU - Undergraduate Study: Frequenty Asked Questions](http://journalism.nyu.edu/undergrad/apply/)

That should answer all your questions.

Journalism at NYU isn’t a separate school by itself, it’s just a program in CAS. I don’t think it counts as a J-School like the ones at Northwestern or Mizzou but it is a reputable program and NYU is a very good place to be for ideal internships and opportunities.

@alix2012:
ive heard that I can start CAS classes this year… but I just dont know what classes to take or how… Its kinda of difficult having to pick our own classes over summer and not even have an adviser or orientation first… Well global cultures classes arent a requirement anymore [at least thats what an lsp adviser told me on the phone.] So i believe the only requirements to be completed fresh/soph yr are 2 science courses, so I am taking one science elective. So if I take one science fall, and another spring, won’t I be finished w/ all my requirements by soph year and be able to start CAS classes?

@ heyitzerin - you’re right, no more global culture requirement after class of 2012…you guys are lucky! As a science major things would have been easier for me being in class of 2013 =/

If you take 2 science courses freshmen year, soph year you’ll still have Social Foundations III and Cultural Foundations III, and 8 electives…so I do advise you do 2 science classes frosh year just to get it over with and give yourself time to plan out future classes for your majors.

^ wait what are these 8 electives? so soph year i would do SF III and CF III along w/ 8 other random lsp courses? Do I have to take those LSP courses? It just seems rather pointless if they dont count for anything and i could be using that time to work on my major in CAS. or maybe im confused?

^ No sorry I meant 6 (not 8) classes of your choice soph year. Your schedule will be like:

Freshmen: SF I and II, CF I and II, Writing I and II, 2 Sci

Soph year: SF III, CF III…the other 6 classes you pick, you can finish LSP after 3 semesters.

^ ohhh okay that’s what i thought you meant because the website says 24 elective credits, so i figured 6.

wonderful wonderful thank you! :]

As someone else else said, journalism is a major in CAS. It is not separate from CAS.

You are required to double major. Have you checked out the class descriptions on the Journalism website? They are very helpful.

The beginning classes are difficult, but most of the higher level classes give you good reporting skills and the teachers are very good. These classes are smaller with about 20 people. Also, a lot of cool speakers come to the program.

I would say the program is also very heavily female dominated. Most of my classes had one to three boys.

As for LSP, once you get to NYU you will stop seeing LSP as handicapped or inferior to the other schools. It is not. Most LSP students take classes within other schools as well. In fact, once you get off this site, no one ever cares if you were in LSP or not. Most of my good friends were, and they are at the same point in their studies as everyone else. In fact, they said they enjoyed the program and the smaller classes, saying they got to make better friends.

I am a senior in CAS, double major in Journalism and Psychology, minor in TV Film Producing. If you have any other questions, ASK! :)
