What's the weather like at UCD?

I heard the summers are brutally hot. What about Fall-Spring? Does it rain a lot? Is really hot?
Will I break a sweat every time I ride my bicycle because of the heat? How do you like it?

It’s hot in September, but not as hot as during June to August, where temperatures are in the high 90s to low 100s. It cools down in fall. Winter is cold. Last year, the coldest it’s been was around 20 degrees on December 10 (the day when student housing kicks everyone out of the dorms for winter break). It usually rains a lot in Davis during October, but last year was rather nice. Unfortunately, we got rain during February instead, haha. Early spring is still a bit chilly, but also warm. Late spring starts to get hot as it gets closer to the summer months.

No, you won’t break into a sweat every time you ride your bike unless it’s in the high 90s to 100s, which, again, only happens during the summer. This summer was quite pleasant–sure, it was in the high 90s and low 100s, but I heard that in June 2011 (the same month I had my orientation), temperatures went up to 110 degrees.

That is really hot. Does it snow in Davis?

The three years I was there, it NEVER got close to snowing in Davis. It rarely even snows north of Davis in Eugene, OR (though I was there in Eugene once when snow fell but melted as it landed).

According to Daviswiki, the last time there was any actual signs of snow (though there doesn’t seem to be a lot) was 2002. The picture from 2009 doesn’t count since there doesn’t appear to be any signs of snow anywhere else in that picture other than on that person’s car.

Can’t be as bad as down here in Riverside, CA. We’ve had 95+ degrees for the last two months.

@ niklas: we’ve also had 95+ degree weather for the last two months. August was the worst–we had an entire week where it was nothing but 100+ degrees. Davis is known to get really hot in summer.

Sounds like Riverside every summer.
100+ weather is the norm during summer. Everyday. All month. Suckish.

Anything will be good in comparison :)

I have lived nearby for 22 years. It can be VERY hot, by almost any definition, from May through September…but it’s a dry heat that feels better than 80s in the southeast, and shade and evenings make a much bigger difference. The weather sort of cycles up from San Francisco every few weeks or so, so when it cools off here, it warms up there, and the fog clears. Fog hits Davis in the winter, and can be pretty dense and scary on the causeway. Winter is only “cold” by California standards. You could get away without owning a “real”, east coast style coat.( I am from NY). Snow in Davis would be newsworthy. It does happen occasionally (three times in 22 years ?), and it was on the news. Snow on the hills between Davis and Napa is less unusual, and of course snow in Tahoe, is an always; and ALMOST always some pretty good skiing just a few hours a way. It is pretty rainy wet from January through March or April. The first time it rains it will be very exciting, but by the third week you think it will never end. But it let’s up from time to time. Things like big fires and mudslides within 30 miles are expected. But not in the city of Davis.

I was worried about summer weather since I had to take summer sessions, but I actually loved how warm it was  People warned me that it would be really hot, but it is hottest only mid-afternoon/early evening. The mornings and nights were really nice during summer.

It is still going to be warm in September but it’ll cool down once fall quarter rolls on.

Winters can get chilly in the mornings but nothing a jacket won’t help with. It rained a few weeks in winter/spring but only really heavily a few times.

During spring quarter it starts to warm up, but it’s still pleasant. Late July-early August was the hottest time this summer.

I’m from the peninsula area of the bay so the weather wasn’t much of an adjustment, just summer. Overall I like Davis weather a lot.

@CosmicBubble have you hear the term, “Chance of a snowball in hell?” If it starts snowing in Davis then I would have to question the theory on climate change and I would become a Republican!!!

well, let’s see: it’s almost 80-degrees at 7:55pm here in the heart of southern california right now… warm breezes outside (which’ll only intensify as we head into our ‘indian summer’/earthquake season)…it’s too hot and i’m sick of it… lol

i’ve visited davis during each season, and i must say i like the weather there. it’s just a cute little tree-filled place. in order to have those beautiful trees, there has to be a good amount of rain. i like rain. wish we had more of it down here. my son has learned to like rain since living up in davis. i see that as a good thing. it gets cold in winter though, so be prepared if you’re from a warm climate. otherwise…enjoy the seasons!

It does get hot during the summer. Solution: go home during the summer, or take the bus around. Winters are fine. Sure, they’re cold compared to Southern California, but warm compared to most of the US.
