When Do Special Status Applicants Receive an Admission Decision?

When were all of your daughter’s application materials received at Pitt?

By very late July all her app materials (app, essays, transcript, ACT only) were submitted and her app was ‘complete’. Received large (8 1/2 x 11) envelope in mail with ‘Congrats’ printed on outside of envelope.

@scholarme the scholarship committee does not begin to meet until November, so there is time to submit recommendation letters. Best way is via email to oafa@pitt.edu.
@chelsey123 formal acceptance would only come via US mail. If the Admissions Committee is requesting additional academic information, it may be requested in an email as well as by mail.

Even though I haven’t received an admission decision, if you send the request for updated test scores, do those applicants still have a relatively good chance for admission if they just improve their scores? If this happens, I’m trying to determine what the minimum score would be that would give me a good chance of being admitted, assuming that GPA and course rigor are strong.

@chelsey123 there really isn’t a minimum score, however, if you are within the mid-range that we publish (freshmen class profile), then you can consider your scores competitive for admission. Yes, I would say that for applicants we request updated test scores and they submit improved test scores, they are more competitive for admission.

hail to pitt, could you clarify what the mid range means.
below are mid range scores for class of 2014 ACT’s:

Middle 50 percent ACT Math 27-32
Middle 50 percent ACT English 27-33
Middle 50 percent ACT Writing 26-31

if someone has a 27M and 27E, is that considered competitive from a standardized test perspective? assume decent course rigor and top 15 percent class rank. or does mid range mean an Math score around 29 and an English score of 30 as these scores are in the middle of the ranges noted above? i realize this is case by case but i thought scores on the lower end noted above might not be competitive enough? Thanks.

Daughter’s special status app complete July 2, still haven’t heard anything

@ctl987 mid range means 50% of students offered admission scored within the posted range, so 25% were lower and 25% were higher. Professional schools, like nursing and engineering, would be at the higher end of the range and above. Applicants on the lower end or below who have very strong rank, curriculum, and gpa to balance out the lower test score.

sorry got cut off there  I was saying if they are on the lower end but have strong high school academic performance, the student would be competitive.

ok thanks, that’s what i thought.

I was wondering, when you request for updated test scores (and this is in reference to the ACT), is that strictly because of the English, Math, and Writing scores, not the Reading and Science? I was told Pitt doesn’t review Reading and Science so does that mean the scores in these sections won’t influence the admission decision at all? If your English, Math, and Writing sections are at the mid 50% but the Science and Reading are in the bottom 25%, will this make a difference in the admission decision because the Science and Reading sections are still low? Or don’t these two sections really matter at all in admission?

Had all material in by July 4,was told would not look at apps til Aug 4, INFORMED TODAY BY LARGE ENVELOPE Accepted

@chelsey123 we are not reviewing the Reading and Science sections of the ACT.

Okay thanks, that’s good to know that only the English, Math, and Writing will factor into the admission decision. If we are requested for new scores & are taking the September ACT with the scores sent directly to Pitt by the end of September, when would you say we would hear an updated decision?

What about Essay writing score?

harrisburg, i think it;s needed as part of your app but not given tons of weight regarding whether you are admitted or not. hopefully, hailtopitt will weigh in

It’s true that Pitt does require the Essay/ Writing score with your application. They say it doesn’t weigh as much as your ACT English and Math but it’s still considered. They don’t review Reading and Science. It’s kind of confusing to me though because they’re still technically seeing the Reading and Science scores so it seems like it could influence their decision. I say this because I know someone who had an ACT English and ACT Math score, both of 30, and they were requested for new scores. (3.9 GPA and around 6 AP/CHS classes). The only negative thing about their app was a 24 in Science and 23 in Reading. That’s why this confuses me, because shouldn’t the 30 in English and 30 in Math be high enough for admission?

chelsea, that is weird. do you know what their composite ACT was? maybe that was lower than what pitt wanted? and to all those who wrapped up the ACT today, congrats!!!

They had 30 English, 30 Math, 24 Science, 23 Reading. So the composite is a 27. I don’t know how it could be that the composite is low because I thought they didn’t consider Science or Reading at all.

yes, that goes against what we;ve been told on here. is it possbile your friend told you wrong? maybe they have a 23E and 30 in reading, that coudl explain it. or maybe, pitt plans to admit them anway but would prefer to see updated scores before offering a formal accept letter. i honestly do not have a good answer on that one other than pitt is getting more competitive on admissions every year.
