I’m pretty sure she reported the correct scores because she’s well-informed on how Pitt only reviews Math, English, and Writing and pointed out how it’s kind of strange that what she had in those areas wasn’t enough to at least be admitted. I know that’s it’s unusual; that’s why I’m questioning if Science and Reading are given some consideration because her scores were lower in those.

Hi Chelsey,

My ACT score is E 31, W 31, M 36, S 31. Composite score 32. My essay score is 5 as I could not complete essay in time.

I have 200+ voluntary work, awards, 3 SAT subject 800 scores, GPA 96.46 (Not sure in 4 scale), Top 4% school ranking and 14 AP class.

Will my low essay score hurt Scholarship if I get accepted?

Pitt does consider your combined English/ Writing score, which is a combination of your ACT English score and your essay, so it’s possible. I’m sure you will still get accepted with a pretty good scholarship though considering how impressive your other statistics are. I think Pitt typically just considers your ACT English and Math for pretty much everything, including scholarships and the Honors College. Therefore, I think you still have a good chance at a good scholarship.

I also received the email requesting new SAT/ACT scores. Could you explain the process of how you go about reviewing the applications that you requested additional information for? I just have a couple of questions. Do they not get reviewed until everyone else’s applications have been reviewed? Also, a lot of us took the September ACT so will our applications be reviewed right after you receive the new scores in early October, or will it not be until awhile later? And as far as the improvement on the scores, since you only look at English, Math, and Writing for the ACT, which do you consider more: the combined score between the three or the individual scores in the three sections to determine whether the scores are high enough for admission?

harrisburg, you have a great shot at getting accepted at pitt. and you have excellent stats so don’t lose sight of that during this crazy process. but do not hold your breath on a scholarship, my kid did not get one with a 33 ACT and slightly lower class rank, what you do have are the SAT subject test scores and the AP classes though so in my mind, that puts you ahead of him and gives you a better shot at a scholarship than him i don;t know about the essay, I would think everything else far outweighs the essay so that score should not hurt u but i am not on the scholarship committee either. also, i don’t know about your family finances but we were pleasantly surprised that my son got offered close to a $5000 need based grant at pitt. we have a fairly high EFC and pitt was more generous with a need based grant than many of the other schools that he looked at. so that can be a door that opens up for you at pitt too. if your heart is set on Pitt, have you considered retesting? if you could pull your ACT up to a 34, that will increase your chance at a scholarship. kids with 34 ACT’s got scholarships last year.

harrisburg, i should add that my son’s ACT English/math breakdown was M28, E36. Since your breakdown in those 2 subtests is higher, that may also help you get a scholarship. Still, I would not bank on you getting one. Be pleasantly surprised if you do, if you need the scholarship to attend, seriously consider retaking as your scores are close enough to get in higher scholarship range with a well prepped retake, and also consider applying to another school(s) where you are likely to get a scholarship. if i remember right, when you are accepted, the acceptance letter also tells you if you are in the scholarship pool or not. however, even if you are in the scholarship pool, that does not mean you will get a scholarship; it just means your application was impressive enough that the scholarship committee will consider you for a scholarship

Q. Could you explain the process of how you go about reviewing the applications that you requested additional information for? I just have a couple of questions. Do they not get reviewed until everyone else’s applications have been reviewed?
A. We will review the application again once the requested information is received. For example, if we are waiting for your Sept. ACT scores, once those scores come in, your application will go for review again.

Q. Also, a lot of us took the September ACT so will our applications be reviewed right after you receive the new scores in early October, or will it not be until awhile later?
A. As soon as those scores start rolling in, we will begin to review those applications. As you can imagine, many scores will be coming in at one time however we will try to review as quickly as possible.

Q. And as far as the improvement on the scores, since you only look at English, Math, and Writing for the ACT, which do you consider more: the combined score between the three or the individual scores in the three sections to determine whether the scores are high enough for admission?
A. The ACT is different than the SAT, so there really isn’t a “combined score”. We review those sections individually and we super-score across tests and across test dates.

Thanks for the answers, they were very helpful! Also, on my application I did not indicate that I was taking the Sept. ACT but I actually did take it. I did request to have my scores sent directly to Pitt on the ACT website. Should I notify Pitt somehow since it wasn’t on my application?
Also, if the Sept. ACT scores are not enough for us to be admitted, would you send another request for new test scores? I’m taking the October SAT and may take the ACT again too. So will Pitt just keep requesting new scores if the applicant is still retaking tests?

@hailtopitt1787 when applying with the special status application, is it to the applicant’s disadvantage that recommendation letters and activity resumes aren’t required?

@kaylamarie097 yes you should email oafa@pitt.edu so we can add that to your file.
@TheRealGingy the decision is primarily based on academics, however, you may follow up with the letters and resume to oafa@pitt.edu.

@hailtopitt1787 - What is the U Pitt Super Score policy? Is the highest scores from SAT and ACT is used for admission and scholarship decision?
Do you also consider super score for grantee medical program?

@hailtopitt1787 I applied on June 8th and had the last bit of material sent out from my school on June 30th. Would you be able to tell me when I might hear back? Thank you for your time :)

@irishdance1996 You really need to call Pitt admissions directly and ask about this. 412-624-7488

@irishdance1996 That’s unusual. It seems like Pitt usually responds in 3-4 weeks max. You should call them and make sure they received everything.

@djays1997 I emailed them over the summer and they told me my application was complete, so I honestly don’t know what’s going on. I was told to get back to them at the end of September if I don’t hear a decision by then, so that’s what I’m sticking to, but it’s making me incredibly anxious :/

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/profile/100346013/irishdance1996 i;d check your junk email to see if you got an email from pitt to retest that your email provider mistakenly put into your junk email, if nothing there, i would call or email pitt. it is close enough to the end of September to recontact them and no point in you staying this anxious.

We are in the same boat, Irishdance. Not sure what the deal is as they said 3 weeks to hear back starting early August. I’m guessing something else is happening…too many apps to look at, a critical person is sick or something because I haven’t heard of anyone getting much info this month. I guess it’s a good sign they’re not asking for another ACT score or first semester grades or something.

@cti987 I’m going to give it until Friday, since when I drive home from school the mail is always waiting for me when I get there. If there isn’t anything by then, I’ll be e-mailing them for sure.

@Mdaddy I applied with the PittPrestige app, so I thought it’d truly be within the three weeks that was indicated in the initial e-mail with the application link. Ended up finding out that they didn’t start looking at any until August, when I had applied June 8th. I’m just curious as to why it’s been so long, but I’m surely thankful that I haven’t been asked for anything like that…yet, at least!

How long should it take for the transcript to be received? The GC sent it via Naviance last week.
