jshain,
LOL The only reason I knew the exact figure is it will need to be repeated here constantly for the next few months.

Also, the NYTimes is running a long series of articles called “The Choice” this winter about college admissions. Featured are some students from a Colorado high school. Two or three of these seniors have applied to SC, so I am interested to read their comments.

syneyral,

Now you know the SC tour guides were giving you correct information.

Earlier today I wrote about some admission statistics. Each college is not only reading applications, but also building a class. Universities need students to fill various majors, play in the orchestra, be student officers, write for the college newspaper and become the future doctors, dentists, achitects and engineers of the future.

The NYTimes printed a list of universities and their admit rates from the entering 2010 class. Although SC intends to admit 22% for the entering class next August, last year in the recession the admit rate was 24%.

Here is a list from the NYTimes of admit rates from a representative list of selective universities and one music conservatory. This was for the fall entering class of 2010.

Julliard----8% of applicants admitted
Dartmouth----12%
Duke----16%
Johns Hopkins----21%
Northwestern----23%

Univ. of California at Berkeley----26%
Emory University----29%
Boston College----31%
Univ. of Virginia----32%
Univ. of North Carolina----32%
Carnegie Mellon----33%
Georgia Tech----51%

About 41% of the SC enrolled students are from private schools.

As stated above USC does not use the common application, EA, ED or a waiting list.

For spring admits I am NOT certain, but I think it is about 100. Perhaps alamemom can clarify the exact number.

It is becoming more difficult each year to be admitted to SC, in my opinion.

I think in september i was reading about the new president of SC, and in his inauguration speech he talked about increasing the percentage of out of state students, thus reducing the percentage of instate students. Are we likely to see this happen dramatically with admission decisions this year? Or was this a plan to happen over time?

it would probably help me a lot if this did happen this year since i have a slim chance of acceptance. my dream school

Thanks for all that great information, Georgia Girl. It can seem daunting. But then, each of us only needs one acceptance out of those lucky 8000. :)

I would also point out that the admission rates to some of the most highly applied to schools within USC are even more severe. The SCA has quoted a 4-6% acceptance rate in the past. I can’t imagine it has gotten much easier.

But I try not to think about that too much. lol.

Since I have written about selecting a class there is one statistic I discovered on U.S. News which should be of interest to you applicants.

According to U.S. News SC is the most economically diverse private ranked national university. It has more Pell Grant holders than Columbia, which used to be No. 1 for private institutions. Roughly 60% of SC students receive financial aid. About 20% receive merit scholarships. Some receive both.

In the class that entered in August of 2010 12% were the first in their family to attend college. SC also has the largest number of international students of any university.

Just plug in USC’s zip code (90089) and then your zip code, choose the large envelope option, and then look at the priority mail expected arrival. I’m in the DFW metroplex and it says to expect it on Thursday if the rumors about the Tuesday mailing are true. I am scared beyond belief

Also thanks for your posts Georgia Girl! You and alamemom are always so helpful. I hope she stops by to put in her two cents about the number of spring admissions. I saw someone in an old thread say that Annenberg alone offered 100 spots for spring admission, so I don’t know if their guess or your guess would be more accurate! 100 per school sounds pretty steep though so idk

Last year Annenberg had a freshmen class of 200, just 200. It does not seem correct that 100 students would be spring admits. That 200 number is official.

MA2011,

I can see there will be quite a few students using that website in the next couple of days!

Those statistics being posted kind of put me on edge a bit I am very…ordinary as an applicant. I am a California resident and am not the first in my family to attend college. I’m also a white female from a public school. But oh well, I am confident in my abilities regardless.

The postal service website said I would see a package by the 23rd. Seeing as I am only about an hour away from USC, that doesn’t surprise me.

Ahh one more day till they post decisions!! My situation with USC is really quite weird. They seem to love students from my school (maybe the attitude/rigour) so a lot of kids from my school apply and get in every year. So this decision is going to raise a lot of excitement in school. EEp!

are you sure DHL sends e-mails to everyone receiving a package from USC? i got a package from UM today and I hadn’t gotten an e-mail informing me of that beforehand… (i thought it was from USC so I almost had a heart attack when opening it!)
i live in france and the letter reached me in 2 working days anyways, so the wait should not be too long…

I’m a very NERVOUS and ANXIOUS Fall 2011 applicant! USC is my first choice (without a doubt) and it is a slight reach for me academically. I’m hoping that all my extra curriculars, essay, interview, and the fact that my mom is an alum will help- but after reading the recent posts about 27,000 referrals- I’m freaking out.

Unfortunately, I will be on a school retreat this week so if it’s true that letters are coming out I’ll find out on Friday (after my retreat)!! So nerve racking! I absolutely hate waiting.

Anyways- I wish everyone the best of luck and hope I can meet some of you as Trojans in the fall.

ukfcra - you may be thinking about the UC system. They have plans to increase out-of-state enrollment at the UCs to generate more money from out-of-state students paying a much higher rate.

USC has always enrolled about 50% of its students from out-of-state - as far as I know there are no plans to change that. At USC the tuition is the same whether a student is in-state, out-of-state or International.

MA2011, I do not know the number of Spring admits, but based on the relative number of admits posting Spring v. Fall, it is not a large number. I do have an improtant note on Spring admits, though - last year it was my observation that the qualifications of those offered Spring admission were indistinguishable from those offered Fall admission. USC receives SO many applications these days and the applicants are so well qualified that they have plenty to choose from to fill both the Fall class and Spring openings with highly qualified candidates.

So would USC ever go into an applying student’s USConnect profile and add stuff, such as program of interest, if nothing was there and put in by the student?
