When is everyone going to CalSO?

Is there major specific advising at CalSO? If yes, do they automatically put you in groups for the major you applied under? If you intend to declare a different major, can you just go and get advising for the major you want to switch to?

I’m still not sure whether this whole “switching majors” thing (especially to impacted ones) is really as easy as previous years’ Cal transfers like emilsinclair claim it is.

Anyone have any experience going to CalSO not intending to major in whatever you applied for?

@redo: I hope housing offers will be out by June 23, when I’ll be at CalSO, but I doubt it.

you can go to whatever major advising thing you want to. they just call out majors and you just go with the person who is designated to take you to the advisor. if i could force feed you a chill pill datransfer, i would  but yeah that’s how i remember it, and anyone feel free to correct me if i’m wrong.

and you should assskkk forr meeeee (if they’re not out by then, obvs)

I think that for L&S you aren’t even required to declare your major until after Fall semester (though you can now if you wanted) so I can’t imagine there’d be a problem with talking to a different advisor. On the other hand, I know that CoC declares it for you automatically when you’re accepted basically and I think Eng and CNR require you to declare before Fall starts.

However, I found that I kind of knew more than my advisor anyway since I had thoroughly researched my potential classes and if the teachers sucked etc. The only tricky part would be if you are trying to get into a class that is designated for majors only but I don’t think you’d encounter that until later anyway.

Right when you get there, you are going to be separated into groups with a student counselor (pretty much a tour guide lol) and from what I noticed the groups were full of other students within your major. If I were you, I’d just contact them and let them know what major you are switching to so that you’re actually with other students who are taking similar classes. I highly doubt they care and provided you fulfill the pre-reqs, you can declare whatever you want within L&S. Since they ****ed up my group, I managed to see the master list and there were a few people who had majors on there crossed out and rewritten.

Thanks redo! Lol, I guess I really do need to chill. I will definitely ask about housing for you when I’m there, if it’s not out by then.

One more question before I chill though ;): do the major advisers have a list of people who are “supposed to be there,” i.e. applied for the major? Do they know what major you applied or do they not even care about that?

@killmyentourage: Thanks for all the info!

So are the groups with the student counselor the same groups as the major advising groups?

Is the student counselor the adviser or is there an official department adviser?

Like you, I also already informed myself a lot about my intended major, which classes to take and etc. Would it matter if I was in the “wrong” group at CalSO if I register for the classes I need for my real intended major anyway?

Since I’m CoC and only about 15 students were at CalSO, they put us in 2 groups and then we all went to our major department advisor (official/adult lol) together who basically signed off on our schedule and gave us an advisor code so we could register on teleBEARS. After that, the student counselor walked us to a computer lab to register. I’m not sure how L&S worked though so I’d go off of what other people said… idk if anyone would have to okay your schedule but I highly doubt it would be a problem and you could always just register for different classes (for all they know, the ones you wanted were full). But again, I’m not really sure if L&S even had you do that or if you could just go wherever and sign up for whatever.

The wrong group probably doesn’t matter but I’d still suggest switching just for the sake of meeting others within your major.

Thanks again, killmyentourage!

L&S people, in the student counselor groups, were you together with only people that have the same major you do? Were these student groups the same groups as the major advising groups?

no, there’s no list of people who are “supposed” to be there or anything! even if you aren’t put into an orientation group that has the majority of people in your major, you’ll be fine if you just listen for your intended major being called out when it’s time to meet your advisor.

student orientation group =/= major advising group

and if i were you, i wouldn’t go through the hassle of trying to switch orientation groups just to be with people in your major…you’ll have plenty of time to meet those people during classes and stuff. plus, you’ll also be able to meet them when you talk to your major advisor.

ohhh my housing info is already out

@ redo: So, student orientation group is not the same as major advising group, but are there really mostly people of the the same major in each student orientation group?

I don’t mind not being with people from my major during the student orientation, as long as I can go to major advising.

@nero: Really? How did you find out your housing info?

I only applied to the I-house and they replied to me. I guess Ihouse is different from the residence hall then.

2 ziater: what is your major?

So there is ziater and myself going to calso this Wednesday! Anyone else add yourself to the discussion!

@datransfer - yeah it seems that they try to put majors together in the orientation group, but when i went for the major advising, there was a kid i hadn’t seen before. just worry about getting in the right major advising group as they call it out, and you will be shhoooo foiiinnneee

edit:
@nero - how long ago did you have to apply for the I-house to actually get it? sounds like a really exciting place to live ahahha

it actually took less than a week so pretty fast. but I already found an off-campus apartment

@Nero: Which documents did you need to provide the I-house with in your application?

@Redo: How large are the groups on average? If they are really small I’ll probably feel like a real traitor when I’ll leave the group to go to major advising, lol. I hope really no one will care about this or call me out.

bearfacts registration and letter of admission. I just took some screenshots.

datransfer - seriously, chill out. groups are like 10ish people and no one gives a **** what you do!!

lol geez redo…

haha btw ever since you commented on how you don’t bother reading my long*** posts, I respond to you in single lines to avoid harsh responses like that!

ahhhhhhh im sorry but datransfers anxiety is giving me gas. i can like feel it from here. her anxiety, not my gas.

and LAWL, thank you for taking me into consideration <3
