I'm a rising junior and visiting a few colleges this summer. I'm thinking that it's too early to set up formal interviews while I'm on campus, besides that I'd like to have another year of school under my belt before I have to do this, but am I passing up an opportunity to meet someone in admissions? Some schools say they don't even interview. Do interviews really matter? Should I definitely try to interview next year with my top choices? (The colleges that I'm most interested in are very competitive).

Junior year is a bit too early. I am a rising senior, and I just had an interview and even some people I know think of that as too early.

You are not passing up on any interviews, you can always sign up for an on-campus interview for your summer next year, or you will most likely get an alumni interview, or request one. Besides, you might change your mind by next year about where you want to apply - it happens.

I’m an incoming senior and I think it’s too early, unless you have your heart set on a match school. My friend just interviewed for a school this week and I was like O_O

ok thanks everyone. That was my feeling, and I don’t feel ready to interview yet, but wanted to make sure.

The summer before your senior year or the fall of your senior year are the best times to interview. If you are applying to small schools the interview can be very important. It varies from school to school. My advice is that is the school offers interviews and it is one of your top choices you should schedule an interview. I would do this even if the school maintains that interviews are “informational only”.

I know of no schools that would allocate an on-campus interview to a rising Junior. They interview rising Seniors only.
